Thoughtful Thursday – Unsocial Networking

nullI belong to a couple of social networks, namely Myspace and Facebook. Must confess to liking Facebook much more. It’s easier to use and has allowed me to catch up with lots more of my friends. I hadn’t really planned on joining, but was convinced to do so. I’m not sorry that I did, except for what I’d like to call the unsocial networking aspects of both it and Myspace.

As an author who likes to get the word out about herself, I understand that a lot of connections are made for purposes of promotion. You friend people and join groups. Post everyone now and then. Notice the every now and then part of it because at some point the strictly promo aspect becomes a little too much hence the unsocial part of it. Those daily reminders or huge Myspace comments that are little more than commercials for what you’re offering.

It’s okay to get the word out there about your work. People expect some of that when you friend someone like an author. But it’s also supposed to be about getting to know each other. Sharing what you think is fun (or not). Showing people a new side of you or pictures of interesting things. Giving people a slice of your life and seeing a slice of someone else’s. If you’re a friend, that’s what you’ll share with me and I hope that’s what I’ll share with you.

My two cents on this Thoughtful Thursday.

Also, while tomorrow is Fun Friday, it’s also Good Friday. In light of that, there won’t be a blog post tomorrow in light of the Holy Day. Look for me to post the names of the various blog winners sometime over the weekend.

  1. I’ve met wonderful people and friends on myspace… I just joined facebook and twitter, although I don’t quite get twitter! I’m just not much of a tweeter i guess. 🙁 The only problems with all these social bits is they suck a lot of time out of your day if you’re not careful.

  2. I’m on My Space with you as a friend. I guess I’m guilty of sending some of the invites to the different applications. 😳

I do love the blog info on your new books though. It helps remind me when they come out so that I can purchase and read them. 😛

Want to take a minute to wish you and your family a very Happy Easter

  3. The problem I see with Facebook is that it can become too constant…all these things take you away from what you should be doing…housework, homework, writing…and you end up with thousands of people hanging around and taking up your time. Psychic vampires, as it were.

I have enough trouble doing what I have to do. I don’t need vampires right now.
    Except in a book!

  4. I recently got on facebook because members of my high school wanted to reconnect before our reunion next year. I have enjoyed parts of it. But I really don’t enjoy when some answer someone else’s facebook comments one word or one line at a time. I got ten messages from one person that way!

    Happy Easter

  5. Hi Caridad, I don’t belong to myspace, though others say I should. I just don’t like it. I haven’t done facebook yet either. Yes, it does all seem for promo to me. I’m trying to come up with unique ways that aren’t being overdone. And I do agree with you– these places, and blogs, should be for socializing and making friends as well as for promo.

  6. I got rid of my MySpace account a while back because I never went on it. I have been thinking about going on Facebook and will definitely look you up if I do. Have a Happy Easter.

  7. I joined My Space and Facebook but can’t get into them “cause I can’t remember my user name and passwords. LOL 😳 Oh well, guess I’m having a senior moment. I’ll remember eventually. I belong to a social network for my high school. Now that one I really enjoy. I have reconnected with old friends and made new ones, some of them that I went to school with their parents. We keep informed of all the important stuff going on in our community. I hope you have a great Easter week-end. It looks like I’ll be spending a lot of time in Church. Gotta run now as my Priest is meeting me for Reconcillation. I missed last night. Hugs and hope you find the prize egg.
