And wow was it a scary feeling. It started as a rumble, kind of like a subway car beneath my feet, only I’m on the 10th floor, so it was no subway!
Then the building swayed back and forth. Like someone had pushed it and now it was recoiling back into place.
Being in New York and with the wounds of 9/11 still not healed, my first thought was – attack.
Then when we realized what had happened, slightly less panic. Just a little less. I mean, the “small” earthquake moved a 40+ story building.
I know those out on the West Coast are sniggling at us wussie Easterners. They probably sleep right through earthquakes like this one. But not us New Yorkers! We’re the city that never sleeps, right?

So many people felt it here in Eastern Ky. One of the court houses actually sustained damage, but I never felt it. Thank the goddess. Love your post and I am still waiting on that email. Have a wonderful day.

Wow, I forgot that you lived in that area. That must have been kind of scary. Glad that you’re OK.
It must have been so odd… I can only imagine what it was like… all my years living on the eastcoast never havin to deal with something like that…
And yes, we had a 4.9 after shock during the night. That I slept through. Hey, maybe I’m becoming like a west coasterner, yes???
I think it’s easier to feel a little wiggle when you’re in a tall building. The ground moving a bit when you’re right on top of it is… well, not as exciting as when you’re perched farther from the fulcrum of surface.
I was sitting in a rocking chair and of course rocking. So I didn’t feel it but I heard it. I know it sounds weird but my husband who was on the couch felt it. But I heard a noise like an animal trying to get in the screen door. Then the sounds turned into more of someone upstairs jumping on the bed. We found out about 20 minutes later that it was an earthquake.
we did feel it very well in New York. Just at first everyone was very confused. Is it me or somebody else felt the same? What to do? Then we got announcement from the building fire director. And then news started coming in. But it was such unusual experience.
We did’nt feel it in Buffalo but I have before & it felt like someone was shaking my chair behind me. I don’t want any more earthquakes around here. We are used to blizzards and that is enough to deal with. I finished my first Caridad Pineiro book The Lost & I can’t wait to get my hands on the next one. I LOVED the ending it made me smile.
