Horror, Paranormal and Fantasy: What’s Hot and What’s Not? #Giveaway

I try to mix up my conferences from year to year so that I can meet new people and experience different things, although my Liberty States Fiction Writers Conference is a mainstay, especially now that it’s added a readers’ track! I just loved hanging with you guys and getting to know you better. If you’re in the NY/NJ/PA area or close by, mark March 16, 2013 on your calendars for next year’s conference!

One of the new venues I’m trying is the Philadelphia Writers’ Conference. I’ll be presenting my workshop on Horror, Paranormal and Fantasy there and have been busy updating it, but I’d like your help to do that.

So if you can, take the time to answer one or more of these questions in the comments section! One lucky person who does so will receive a copy of one of my e-books as my way of saying thanks! Here goes:

If you read horror, name one or two favorites?
Do you like horror that is gory or do you prefer psychological horror?

Have you read a YA paranormal in the last six months?
Do you think vampires are overdone or do you still love vampire stories?

Do you prefer that your urban fantasy story have a romance?
Do you like alpha females in your urban fantasy stories?

Have you read a straight fantasy novel in the last six months?
Who are some of your favorite fantasy authors?

Thanks so much for helping out with this!

  1. I don’t do horror or YA paranormal very much. Lately it has been vamps, shifters, demons.
I do no think vamps are overdone….there are alot of great writers out there who have come out with great vamp books lately which are all different and interesting in their own way.

  2. I don’t read horror but do read paranormal and YA paranormal.

I have read a couple YA paranormal stories in the last 6 months.

I think vampires are overdone and there is such a huge selection and I feel it’s because of the popular movie series
Twilight that started it all. I’m not as fond of vampires as I am werewolves.

  3. P.S. to the last question:

    YOU, of course. 😀

Can’t help you w/ your new project in NY/NJ/PA area if you meant it “physically”…too far, sorry.

  4. If you read horror, name one or two favorites?
–> Haven’t in a long while, but Dean Koontz, Anne Rice, Stephen King are among those I read.

Do you like horror that is gory or do you prefer psychological horror?
–> Psycho horror, of course. More challenging and scarier, kept you guessing.

Have you read a YA paranormal in the last six months?
–> Does that “Twilight” saga count? And I love Rick Riordan’s novels, don’t think that’s YA enough, it’s somewhere up there w/ “Harry Potter”, maybe “Junior YA” or do they called it “Teens”??

Do you think vampires are overdone or do you still love vampire stories?
–> Absolutely! I’m vamped out! But there’re good ones out there, and I did read them. Just too many lately.

Do you prefer that your urban fantasy story have a romance?
–> Yes, certainly. A happy ending is always welcome. After all, it’s “Fantasy”, goes together w/ “Romance” quite nicely, I think.

Do you like alpha females in your urban fantasy stories?
–> Sometimes, don’t like too timid, simpering females. Like ones w/ spunk, backbone and independent thinking and all. Yeah! “Alpha” kick ass w/ attitude and cynical humor too, why not?

Have you read a straight fantasy novel in the last six months?
–> I think so. Unless what mean by “straight fantasy” is different than what I’m thinking.

Who are some of your favorite fantasy authors?
–> But I would categorize my fave as “Fantasy/Paranormal Romance” = Jacquelyn Frank, Christine Warren, Lora Leigh, Sylvia Day, and a few more authors.

  5. If you read horror, name one or two favorites?
I love horror. I love to scare myself only to be angry with myself when I can’t sleep. I enjoy the tried and true, Like Koontz and King, but there are other like John Saul and R.L, Stine. I have hundreds of favorites. WAITING by Frank Robinson is good, WHAT THE NIGHT KNOWS and THE FACE by Dean Koontz and of course my own creation EMINENT DOMAIN.
Do you like horror that is gory or do you prefer psychological horror?
I have never been a fan of gory/slasher type books or movies. Psychological horror gives me more “creep” factor. You know when you think something is behind you but it isn’t, or that thing you THOUGHT you saw out of the corner of your eye—that sort of thing.
Have you read a YA paranormal in the last six months?
Not in the last six months, but I have read a few that I thought were quite well done.
The girl who owned a city by O.T. Nelson, and Angela Diabola.. also Superstition by R.L. Stine.
Do you think vampires are overdone or do you still love vampire stories?
There are a lot of vampire stories to be sure, but I can never get enough when they are well written with engaging memorable characters. Cliché? perhaps, but let me tell you I cannot STAND the Twilight movies, please don’t get me started.
Do you prefer that your urban fantasy story have a romance?

Yes, but it doesn’t have to “be” the whole story. In my opinion almost every story had a modicum of romance, but it doesn’t have to have that boy meets girl and fall in forever love by page six syndrome
Do you like alpha females in your urban fantasy stories?
Yes, but I tend to like them to be wise cracking and a little off center. Not always the kate Beckinsale (rise of the Lycans) kick-ass girl.
Have you read a straight fantasy novel in the last six months?
Impossible by Nancy Werlin, On a Pale Horse by Piers Anthony and The Snow Spider.

Thanks so much for helping out with this!
Thank you for allowing me this moment.

  6. I don’t really read horror books.

I’ve read a YA paranormal. I don’t think vampires are overdone.

I like alpha females in any type of book.

  7. I don’t do Horror very well. I have a very weak stomach.
The last YA I read was The Hunger Games trilogy.
As was evident by last week’s blog tour there are too many types of Vamps to have too many of them.
Yes I do prefer to have romance in most books I read. What can I say, I’m a romantic.
Of course the heroine needs to be a kick butt badass sort of like in the Underworld movies.
I read so much that I don’t always remember the genre of the books I read so maybe I read a Fantasy novel and didn’t notice that I did. That happens when you have a lot of time on your hands and use it reading.
Maybe my answers will help. I sure hope so.
BTW, your Urban book that you gave us Chapters of /I am still wanting to see that in print. It’s a great book. Just my thoughts.

  8. I do read some horror… psychological horror is my preference… not really into gory… read one book that once actually made me sick to my stomach with the descriptions… truthfully, I could not finish reading it.

Have you read a YA paranormal in the last six months? yes I have

I still love vamps… love the variety out there.

Do you prefer that your urban fantasy story have a romance? Yes, I prefer having romance in most of the books I read.

Do you like alpha females in your urban fantasy stories? yes I do

Have you read a straight fantasy novel in the last six months? I have read 2… need to start adding more to my reading.

    😀

  9. Have you read a YA paranormal in the last six months?

ANSWER No – Actually I tend to stay away from YA books. There are one or two exceptions. They always feel lacking to me, and no, the lack of sex does not bother me. Now I will browse through a YA to see if it’s something my son will like.

Do you think vampires are overdone or do you still love vampire stories?
Answer – Never been much of a vampire person, and yes, I think they have been overdone. However, certain authors’ creativity makes me take a step backwards and go “Wow, I really like her vampires.”

Do you prefer that your urban fantasy story have a romance?
Answer – Depends on the plot and the characters. What I do not like is where Heroine sleeps with this guy and then in the next book she sleeps with another guy. Now I like a good love triangle.

Do you like alpha females in your urban fantasy stories?
Answers – Yes, and she must have a sarcastic wit and snarky!

Have you read a straight fantasy novel in the last six months?
Answer – Not in the last six months. Which I do have to remedy. Since I love my high fantasy books. Mostly why I have not read any I am missing key books in the series that keeps me from reading it.

Who are some of your favorite fantasy authors?
MERCEDES LACKEY (this woman is a sheer genius! I wanna live in her Valdemar world), David Eddings, Anne Bishop, Jennifer Roberson, Elaine Cunningham, Jane Lindskold, Barb and JC Hendee, Ed Greenwood. RA Salvatore

  10. I haven’t read horror or YA recently. I enjoy a good vampire romance–I don’t think it’s overdone yet. The YA market might lose interest and move on to something else, but I think the hardcore PNR fans will always want vampires.

I’m not currently reading a vampire PNR, though. I’m reading The Claimed! There’s this great part where…you’ll just have to read it. 😉

  11. I dont read horror. BUT I love YA parnormal novels and have read several over the past few months including The Archangel Academy series by Michael Griffo and several others. I still totally love vampires I think saying having vamps in your book is overdone would be like saying having people in your books is overdone LOL. They can all be different and have their own story just like people do. I do prefer my urban fantasies to have romance and alpha females are awesome!

  12. Sounds like an interesting panel, which I could join you.
    so…my answers:
If you read horror, name one or two favorites?
Honestly, I couldn’t name one or two favorites — I generally look for any mention of the Bram Stoker Award OR author OR publisher when looking for horror. I seem to have brought a lot of Scott Nicholson recently. He’s had a lot of free offers and I enjoy his work.

Do you like horror that is gory or do you prefer psychological horror?
Both. Even better when they are married together. I also enjoy gory matched with good dose of snark or smut or both.

Have you read a YA paranormal in the last six months?
last YA paranormal I read was Carrie Ryan’s Forest of Hands and Teeth.

Do you think vampires are overdone or do you still love vampire stories?
I still love vampire stories, but the market is overdosed with them at the moment and it’s hard to find the good ones from the, erm, how to put it nicely, self-pubber who doesn’t pay for editor or cover. I think that’s a nice way to put it 😉

Do you prefer that your urban fantasy story have a romance?
    Yeah. I do.
Do you like alpha females in your urban fantasy stories?
    Most definitely. Chick should kick-ass!

Have you read a straight fantasy novel in the last six months?
    Nope.

    Hope my answers help xx

  13. I love a good vampire story . I do not think they are over done, but I am noticing I am now reading alot of YA books & books about witches. I do like psychological books like Heartsick by Chelsea Cain. The books are now being made for tv on FX. —Rachel
