So why do I love being Wicked After Dark?

Well, I’ve actually got a confession to make and some of you who have been doing the KISSED BY THE VAMPIRE blog hop may know what it is: I’m afraid of the dark.

Yep, you read that right. Total chicken, especially in creepy places like cemeteries or on deserted streets. It doesn’t take much to have me jumping or running away.

Why? you wonder. As a kid, my mom and sis would watch all these horror movies on rainy weekends. Not wanting to be excluded, I would join in, but I could not handle the scare and gore the way they could. Inevitably I’d go up to bed that night and pull the covers up over my head in the hopes of staying safe until morning.

What better way to deal with that fear than to write about it? In my paranormal worlds, I have control of those creatures of the night. I can have them do what I want and whether good guys or bad, I can get into their heads to understand them better.

It’s like naming your fear so you can deal with it. Maybe even banish it. It’s much harder to fear something that is concrete and can be identified.

Writing paranormals is like naming that fear. The demons and other creatures have become real on the pages, but I am no longer afraid of them when they are there.

Now if I could only deal with my fear of heights. Maybe I should call it Fred. What do you think?

Take a moment to share your fears or let us know why you love paranormals for a chance to win my Wicked After Dark blog hop giveaway.

  3. I’m scared of clowns.. Not knowing who or what kind of person is behind all the paint… or maybe it’s because of all the creepy clowns in the movies…
I like Paranormals because it’s total escapism and in paranormals, authors can really stretch the boundries, go beyond the bizarre.

  6. I do not have a problem with heights as long as there is something to hang on to. I’ve been to the top of the Sears Tower in Chicago & the CNN Tower in Toronto & leaned over to look straight down at the ground. However, if you ask me to climb onto a 3 step ladder in the middle of the room, my knees knock. I’ve also discovered that I can’t get on an escalator anymore. Looking at the stairs moving away from me makes me dizzy.

  8. I am terrified of spiders and don’t care for snaked too much, either. What I like about paranormal stories is that they are a bit fanstastic, but not terribly different from our world.

  12. So excited this hop is finally here! I am afraid of heights. It terrifies me to be up on a tall building without some kind of protective barrier like glass. I recently saw a photo of the walkway over the grand canyon and (shivers) thought I would throw up when I saw people just walking on it and taking in the sights. Thanks for being part of the hop and for the chance to win.

  18. I love PNR b/c it’s always so different from real life. I like to escape, literally.
I love scary movies, but no one to watch them with; I won’t let my kids, and the hubs hates them.
Since moving to Oregon, I’ve gotten afraid of these stupid Hobo Spiders! They’re huge and I always scream and run! lol
Thanks so much for the chance,

  19. Oddly, I’m not afraid of the dark UNLESS I give in and watch a really scary movie with my sons and husband. Then I snuggle in bed, listening to my husband snoring, and refuse to get out of bed til morning. LOL When I was a teen I read all the scary books I could get my hands on. Now, I read paranormal romance that has good against evil, and good wins– that’s a must for me. Good must kick evil’s butt. LOL

My real fear is cockroaches– I lived in the south for a short time and woke up to a scratching noise above my head. I looked up and a wood roach, almost 2 inches long, was on my reading light. Scared me SO bad–fortunately I don’t see them in Michigan so I don’t have to worry. LOL

  20. My biggest fear is Geckos! They look exactly like lizards except they are a whitish see thru color. I think they freak me out so much because they are see thru and you can actually see their internal organs, even their heart beating. I am not however bothered by regular lizards. I live in south Louisiana so during the warm months (usually 11 out 12 months) you can find them outside your home on the walls catching bugs. If one gets to close to me I will freak out, heart starts beating faster, break out in a cold sweat. Once as I was walking back into the house from the back porch one fell off the ceiling and landed on my shoulder.Iscreamed, started hyper-ventilating, and had a serious panic attack. Yucky, I am so fearful of them, nasty creatures!

  21. Somebody standing directly behind me scares the hell out of me now. I think it has something to do with being in the hospital for a long time. Add to this fear of heights, airplanes and not finding a bathroom…you know that dream, don’t you?
    Shiver!

  22. I am super afraid of the dark. My husband thinks it’s ridiculous that I need to have at least one light on on each floor of the house to sleep and I have to have a blanket on even in the summer.

  23. I am a pretty tough girl, All the girls in the neighborhood were tom boys. We can all hold our own. BUT, when I see a snake, all bets are off. I scream like a girl. I dont mind them behind glass at the zoo, but if they are in frond of me I run & scream.—Rachel

  24. Hi Caridad! Well, here goes, I am deathly afraid of grasshoppers and bats! Whew, there I said it (Shiver!!). Although, the older I get, the more I seem to be able to deal.

  25. Horror movies don’t scare me other than I’ll turn my face when there is a gruesome scene; but heights, there is no cure for…

  26. Looks like you have a LOT of friends (224) who were/are afraid of the dark. I am afraid of my husband/daughter standing too close to an unprotected cliff edge when we are National Parking. I have to be afraid for them because they aren’t :>(

  27. I am afraid of heights and spiders. I usually have a bottle of air freshener in every room so I will spray the spiders and stun them will I get a big shoe.

  28. I’m most afraid of clowns. There is something so creepy about them and whenever I see one I think about Pennywise from IT.

  29. I have a feeling this is going to be a great blog hop! I love your books Caridad 🙂

I am still afraid of lightning and thunderstorms. It seems that my electric goes out whenever there is a bad one and for some reason (probably because I really hate the pitch dark)I hear every noise in my house and it freaks me out. Usually I just light candles in my bedroom and lock the door!
