THE PRINCE’S GAMBLE #Sandy Campaign for the #Jersey #Shore

My friends know better than to double dog dare me! Nearly three years ago I took a trip to Las Vegas to do a writing weekend with friends. I was in between projects and wanting to work on a new romantic suspense, I just needed an idea for it.

The time with my friends was wonderful. We talked books, ate books, lived and breathed and dreamed books. Always a great time, but especially with these dear friends. Of course, we did squeeze in time to take in the sights of Las Vegas, have a nice dinner, see a show and spend a relaxing day at the spa.

As we went from place to place, ideas started taking hold in my brain, but they didn’t gel until my friends double-dog dared me when I said that I could take all our experiences and work them into a book.

THE PRINCE’S GAMBLE was the result of that dare, but being a Jersey girl, I knew I had to set the prince’s casino in Atlantic City. Of course, then Hurricane Sandy came along, causing so much damage to not only Atlantic City, but my beloved Jersey Shore.

I’ve shared some images of that damage on my Facebook fan page.

I’ve always been a person who believed that if you weren’t part of the solution, you were part of the problem. Because I don’t want to be part of the problem, I decided that I was going to be part of the solution by helping out to restore the shore that I love so much.

In order to do that, I’m going to be donating my share of the proceeds from sales of THE PRINCE’S GAMBLE from now until March 1, 2013 to the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund.

THE PRINCE’S GAMBLE is now available for sale at Amazon and should be available for sale shortly at B&N.

From Strippers to Suspense

Murano glass ceilingPeople often ask me what helps me create new stories. Is it an article I see in a newspaper? Sometimes, but more often than not, stories come to me thanks to the things that I am lucky enough to be able to experience.

A few months ago I was blessed to get away for a writers’ weekend with some writing buddies. Our writing destination – Las Vegas.

Las Vegas! You may wonder how conducive that could be to writing, but after a few days I came away with the proposal for a brand new romantic suspense novel that is currently sitting with my editor for consideration.

How did that happen?

Well for starters, my friends and I spent some time talking out plots and helping each other with problems we were having. It’s always good to bounce ideas off people to see if the idea is working. Then we spent time writing every day.

So now you’re thinking – You could have done that anywhere.

Well, you’re right, but the one thing about Las Vegas – or any new location – was going around and exploring since many of those places and activities generated the idea for that new romantic suspense proposal.

Stripper ClassFor example, we took a class on stripping and lap dancing! Yep, you’re reading it right. Why? Well, as I bumped my knees on the pole, my brain was busy figuring out how the heroine in the book could tempt her hero.

A spa trip yielded yet more insights on temptation while seeing all the construction going on prompted ideas of what would happen if the hero happened to be building a casino in Las Vegas.

Add all those themed casinos, it occurred to me what kind of theme was missing and what kind of casino my hero could be building.

Arc de Triomphe in front of Paris

What about the suspense you’re wondering? Research into the problems casino owners face, like prostitution, money laundering, card cheats, etc. got my mind going about what would be the action behind the romance (and no, not spilling the beans just yet on what I chose!)

Last but not least, a hike into the Red Rock Canyon provided the perfect setting for a suspenseful chase scene!

I bet you’re saying to yourself, “But what if I can’t get away to some place new?”

Well, look around at the place where you are. What kinds of things are there that you see every day but someone else might find interesting? Are there any places or events you could use in your novel? For example, an interesting local festival or landmark? Could they be the backdrop for your novel (think Fort Hancock as I did for SINS OF THE FLESH). Being intimately familiar with a locale often adds a level of authenticity that resonates with readers moreso than an exotic locale.

Let your imagination run wild! It’s your greatest gift as a writer. Maybe you’ll find like I did that you can go from a stripper 101 class to a suspense novel just by flexing your imagination.

Guilty Pleasures Monday – Josh Duhamel

This Monday’s Guilty Pleasure is Josh Duhamel. This Emmy-winning hottie was always good in LAS VEGAS and I wish we had seen a little more of him in TRANSFORMERS 2. Duhamel has some movies coming up in 2010 with WHEN IN ROME and RAMONA AND BEEZUS!

Josh is also married to Fergie from the Black-Eyed Peas. Hope you enjoyed today’s Guilty Pleasure.

Thoughtful Thursday – Recharging Your Batteries

batteryYou’ve probably guessed it from past posts and blogs, but I’m a Type AAA personality, always on the go and with every minute of every day planned. Why? It’s the only way I can get everything done!

Of course, that kind of constantly being on the go can be really draining at times, so I was so looking forward to my writing retreat with my friends! We met in Las Vegas and it was wonderful!

Long mornings and late nights working on our books, talking about possible plots, synopses, you name it. Breaks for luscious dinners and some shows. Even a trip to a spa that’s already going to make it into a book, along with the whole Vegas locale.

The change of pace and the focus on just a few things – namely writing and my friends – really helped to recharge my batteries and I feel totally ready to tackle both some old and new projects that I had been struggling with for a few weeks.

So, if you’re feeling like you’re in a rut or can’t seem to get past an obstacle, take a moment and try something different. Take some time off and do something you would never think to do – like a few hours at a spa! Or visit with some friends and share ideas, like we did. I know it worked wonders for me and I hope it will work wonders for you!

Guilty Pleasures Monday – Jim Caviezel

Sorry to be a little late this morning, but I am in Las Vegas on a writing weekend with some friends. Also researching a new romantic suspense that I’m plotting in my brain! It’s going to be an interesting one!

Also – I will be picking winners for last week’s guest blogs shortly and also, shipping prizes this weekend so look for them to arrive shortly!

There’s one last chance for you to win a prize this week. My buddy and fellow author Marta Acosta is having me visit at her fabulous Vampire Wire Blogspot. Drop by her blog and leave a comment for a chance to win a prize! Just click here or cut and paste this link into your browser: http://vampirewire.blogspot.com/

But without further ado, today’s Guilty Pleasure Monday is Jim Caviezel. Love that dark hair, blue eyes and hot body.

Two great Jim movies are THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO and ANGEL EYES. My all time favorite, though, stars another Guilty Pleasures Monday hottie – Dennis Quaid. What movie is that?

FREQUENCY. It’s a wonderful alternate timeline story about a father and son who connect across time via an old radio and sun spots. Not to be missed. They handled the entire story line fabulously and of course – Jim and Dennis. Don’t miss it because it’s a great flick!
