RIP Jose Fernandez

The shocking news came on while we were watching the Mets game last night. Cuban-American Jose Fernandez, who we feared as a competitor for the Miami Marlins, was dead at 24 in a boating accident.

Yoenis Cespedes, a fellow Cuban and Mets outfielder, hung up a Mets jersey with Fernandez’s name and number in tribute. Others followed suit all around the league.

Fernandez was voted the 2013 National League Rookie of the Year award. His was a promising life cut short, but it was a life of inspiration and as a fellow Cuban-American, it pained me to hear of his loss.

A Cuban-American sportscaster from Miami spoke about what Fernandez meant to the Cuban community, much like each and every successful Cuban resonates with Cubans all across the U.S.

We came here for freedom and to live the American dream. Fernandez embodied that spirit and attaining the dream.

At 14 he attempted to defect, but was caught and sent to prison. He tried again three other times and for each failure, he went to prison. During the successful attempt, Fernandez’s mother fell overboard and Fernandez had to rescue her, risking his own life to do so.

While Fernandez, his mother, and sister attained freedom here in the U.S. in 2007, his grandmother was left behind and it took six years before she could join her family in 2013. In 2015, Fernandez became a U.S. citizen.

Freedom was that important to Fernandez as it is to so many Cuban refugees who risked so much to get here. I understand. I lived it and have had the ability to attain the American Dream.

It’s why I stand and place my hand over my heart for the national anthem even when I’m at home and watching a game.

RIP Jose Fernandez. My sympathies to his family on their loss and to the families of the two other men killed in the boating accident.

#ManCandyMonday Congratulations Hall of Famer Mike Piazza

I love Mike Piazza! I have his jersey. His and David Wright’s. Two great guys who played with all their heart for the Mets.

Mike was signed to the Dodgers as a favor, but he soon earned his spot with his powerful hitting. In fact, he’s the best hitting catcher of all time.

My most memorable moment of Mike as a Met was at the first game being held at Shea Stadium after September 11th. With the Mets down in the eighth inning, Mike came up to the plate and hit a home run to give the Mets the lead over the Braves.

Mike spent over eight years with the Mets and was inducted into the Hall of Fame this weekend as a Met, joining Tom Seaver as the only other Met in the Hall of Fame.

You go, Mike! You can click here to read highlights from Mike’s emotional and wonderful Hall of Fame speech.

#ManCandyMonday Giancarlo Stanton

I’m back from San Diego and boy did I have a blast. The All Star Game has inspired me to finish up the next baseball book and I had an amazing time attending workshops, talking with friends about work and life, and meeting new people at the RWA Conference. I’ll be sharing some photos tomorrow from all the events.

For today, since I’m in baseball mode, I’ve got sexy Giancarlo Stanton up at the plate. He might be a Mets killer with the might swing of his bat, but he is a hottie!

#ThrowbackThursday #RWA2016 Literacy Signing

Counting down the minutes until I leave for San Diego. I am so excited to not only be going to RWA, but baseball fan that I am, I snagged tickets to go to one of the All Star Game Fan Fest events. SO EXCITED!!

I will be sharing lots of photos from all the events next week when I get back.

Today’s Throwback is to the 2012 RWA Literacy Signing. My buddies K.M. Fawcett and Cathy Tully are taking a moment to drop by and lend their support to a worthy cause.

The 2016 “Readers for Life” Literacy Autographing will be held on Wednesday, July 13, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina in San Diego, California. It’s RWA’s goal this year to reach the 1 Million Dollar Mark in donations for literacy!

I’ll be donating copies of ONE NIGHT OF PLEASURE to be sold to raise money and I’ll have some special goodies for those who come to the signing!

#ManCandyMonday Michael Conforto of the Amazing Mets

Yes, I’m a Mets fan. I have been for some time. It’s hard to be a Mets fan, but I love the underdog.

Conforto is an amazing young player and such a cutie. He shows grace under pressure, can hit like a more seasoned player, and is a good outfielder. I’m looking forward to seeing so much more of him.

Plus, he’s only the third player in baseball history to have played in the Little League World Series, College World Series, and Major League World Series. Plus, as a rookie, he hit two home runs in a World Series game, a feat that hasn’t been done since 1996.

I’m happy to say I’ll be going to a game in a week. Against the Nationals which should be fun since the Mets and Nationals are battling for first.

#ManCandyMonday Baseball Player Sam Fuld

I’m back! I’ve been busy doing some research for the new Bridesmaids series, now tentatively titled The Jersey Girl Bridesmaids, and getting to some major chores that needed to get done.

Things are good otherwise and I hope they are good with you!

Since one of the things I’ve managed to sneak in is some Mets games on TV, today’s Man Candy choice is Sam Fuld who is currently an outfielder for the Oakland Athletics. Sam is known for his acrobatic catches and for also being a full-time player with Type 1 diabetes. Sam was also a high school and college All-American who married his high school sweetheart.

#ManCandyMonday Jeff Francoer aka Frenchie

It’s that time of year when a young woman’s thoughts turn to . . . baseball. Pitchers and catchers report next week to start the Spring Training Season and I, for one, can’t wait for this year. I’m hoping my Mets will be able to repeat last year’s magic and make it to the World Series again.

Today’s choice is a former Met. I always liked him and he’s a funny guy. Got to see him up close at a batting practice and he seemed really nice. Jeff Francouer, aka Frenchie, has played for a number of teams during his career including the Braves, Phillies, Giants and Padres. He’s an outfielder with a good arm who often comes through with the clutch hit in the batter’s box. He’s also got a great smile!
