THE SORCERY AND STEAM BUNDLE

The Sorcery and Steam Bundle – Curated by Kristine Kathryn Rusch

Sorcery. Steam. Ghosts. A touch of romance. Mythic creatures. Some truly violent bad guys. And one little black cat.

We have everything in this bundle that a fantasy reader could want.

Including magic.

We have magic in all forms, from the magic that gods use when they come to Earth to magic that a familiar inspires when she helps a man with limited ability keep his spells fresh. We have vampires and werewolves. We have parasols and tea and lovely chocolates. We have FBI agents facing killers and assassins who can kill with a blink.

A fantastic story for every mood, and steampunk. Not enough to call this a steampunk bundle, but enough that we could add “steam” to our subtitle. (We can also add “steam” for another reason. One or two of these books have steamy scenes, that have nothing to do with engines and everything to do with heat between humans.)

We also have new releases in this bundle. Usually writers contribute the first books in a series or a book that fits the theme but has been published for a long time. Four writers—Dayle A. Dermatis, Catherine Banks, Michelle Fox, and me— decided to put their most recent book in the bundle. In fact, Catherine and Michelle have contributed books exclusive to StoryBundle. You can’t get those books anywhere else.

Pauline Baird Jones started our steampunk trend by asking me if she could include her wonderful Specters in the Storm book. Of course I said yes. That yes opened the door to Fiction River: Alchemy & Steam, the anthology series’ popular steampunk volume.

It also enabled me to add Gail Carriger, known for her steampunk novels. She contributes a book in Delightfully Deadly series. And hers isn’t the only series. We also have Ann Gimpel’s Coven Enforcers, Caridad Pineiro’s twelve-book Calling/Reborn books, and Melissa Snark’s six-book Ragnarök books (started before the movie, I’ll have you know).

We have magic without steam, as well. Dayle A. Dermatis’s Nikki Ashburne died, then got revived with an added skill—the ability to see ghosts. Both Catherine Banks and Melissa Snark have added mythic gods and goddesses into their fictional stew. I’m the one who provided the cat, although Ruby, a familiar, would argue with me for that sentence. She’s more than a cat. She’s something special.

What I didn’t expect, what I didn’t plan for, and what I didn’t see until I had compiled my author list for the bundle, was that every writer in the bundle (with the exception of one short story writer in Fiction River: Alchemy & Steam) is female.

I hadn’t planned to put together a women-only StoryBundle, but I had.

I just asked writers whom I’d worked with before, and who impressed me in one way or another. After the invitations went out, after the acceptances came in, and as I put together the letter to inform everyone who their partners in bundling would be, I realized that every name I typed was female.

Which is just about perfect, considering that March is Women’s History Month.

We’re kind of messing with history, considering how much magic and steampunk we’ve thrown into the mix (and how some of our stories have no history at all). But we’re reaching for the spirit of the celebration, not the celebration itself.

In addition to the history and the magic and the steam, we also have a charity to promote.

This bundle’s charity is AbleGamers. In the past twenty years or so, the online gaming world has become a major place for people all over the world to interact with each other. AbleGamers makes it possible for people with disabilities to participate, by providing everything from equipment personalized for each person’s needs to advice to the game developers on how to make their entertainment accessible.

Entertainment takes our mind off the troubles in the world. You can entertain yourself with this bundle, and pay for someone else’s entertainment in the online gaming world. Or you can buy the bundle as a gift, allowing a friend to read some of your favorite authors. As you pick up a copy of this bundle, please consider throwing in a few dollars to help AbleGamers.

Thanks! – Kristine Kathryn Rusch

#WickedWednesday – A Short Read from FOR LOVE OR VENGEANCE

As I’ve mentioned, I’m lucky to be taking part in a great new project — the Sorcery and Steam Story Bundle. This bundle is a collection filled with magic, fantasy, suspense, bad guys, mythic creatures, goddesses and a little bit of romance!

My contribution to the story is For Love or Vengeance, a unique story from The Calling is Reborn Vampire series. Unique because the vampires are not at the forefront of the story. Instead we have a Greek Goddess taking the lead in order to help a host of FBI Agents find the Broadway Butcher, a serial killer who is murdering aspiring young actors and musicians. You’ll get to meet Nemesis, the Greek Goddess of Vengeance who has taken human form as FBI Agent Helene Alexander and her partner, Miguel Sanchez.

For today, a wicked sexy read for you from the FOR LOVE OR VENGEANCE! For mature audiences only, please!

Teaser

Miguel called himself a fool, and yet was powerless to deny he needed her. Needed the comfort of her arms. Needed to reach beyond her inflexible façade to the intense woman within. The one who felt pain and joy so deeply. Who understood the need for justice, and strove so hard to find it. The woman he hoped might be capable of more than just an occasional one-night stand.

She was leading him toward the door to another part of the club. It was guarded by a pale, muscular bouncer. The bouncer moved to block their path, but she held up the key and waved her hand, literally brushing him aside so they could pass.

Her steps were quick and short, the sound of her heels staccato sharp against the tiled floor in the hall. Room number five was at the end of the hall. Her hand fumbled as she tried to slip the large key into the lock and Miguel reached out to steady her hand.

She looked up at him and murmured, “Thanks.”

“My pleasure.”

Never one to miss a beat, she said, “And mine, I hope.”

They went in and she locked the door behind him, then flashed him a sexy smile.

For a brief second, he registered an assortment of adult toys tacked up on one wall. And then her body was pressed against him, his back against the door.

She was quick to reach for his suit jacket, but he gently grabbed hold of her hands and stilled their motion. “I know you need to forget what happened today, but there’s no sense in rushing. We have all night.”

He reached up and caressed her curls, then rested his hand at the crook of her neck. He gently brushed aside her hair and bent his head. Nuzzling the soft skin by his hand, he whispered, “You’re very beautiful.”

She tipped her head to give him better access and murmured playfully, “Tell me something I haven’t heard before.”

“Immodest, too.” He kissed the side of her throat and leisurely dragged his mouth along the sensitive skin to a spot behind her ear. “And headstrong.”

“Ooh, you say such sinful things to a girl,” she cooed breathily.

He tugged on her finely worked hoop earring with his teeth, tongued her lobe, and whispered, “Opinionated.”

She cradled the back of his head and slipped her hands beneath his suit jacket to tug him closer. “I think those two are almost redundant,” she murmured.

“Smart-mouthed.” Then he covered that smart mouth with his, tasting her full lips. Urging her into the kiss with the press and tug of his mouth against hers. Inviting her to open, and when she did, slipped in to trace the perfect line of her teeth. He danced his tongue across hers and dared her to do more.

She dropped her hands from his shoulders and covered his pecs. Found the hard nubs of his nipples beneath the fabric and circled them with her fingers, making his erection surge to life. He gave a rumble of pleasure. She smiled against his lips. “You like that, don’t you?”

He could lie, but what was the sense. She seemed to know more about what gave him pleasure than he did himself. “Mmm. I like.”

She increased the pressure, tweaking the nubs before bending down to suckle first one, then the other, through the fabric of his shirt.

He held her head to him and because he needed more, he grasped her hand and moved it to his cock.

#TuesdayTip – Why Should You Consider the Traditional Publishing Route Today?

There are a lot of people who don’t think taking the traditional publishing route today makes sense. I’m not one of those people. Ever since my first experience in publishing when the line I was writing for was closed down, I’ve always thought it makes sense not to have all your eggs in one basket. For that reason when it became possible for me to try more than traditional publishing, I did, but I also kept my foot in the door in the traditional area because the market is too volatile to turn down opportunities of any kind.

In addition, who doesn’t want to get paid in advance and have the assistance of experienced editors, cover artists, formatters and publicists to help you produce your work? I, for one, love working with seasoned veterans who bring out the best in my writing. I also want to spend more time writing and not running a business, especially since I still work full time and my free time is limited.

So how do you get together with a traditional publisher considering many of them won’t talk to someone without an agent? Going to a conference where agents and editors take pitches is one way. Putting on my President’s hat, the upcoming Liberty States Fiction Writers conference has over a dozen agents and editors who will take pitches for various genres. Taking off that hat, the national RWA conference is also a great place.

But like I said, not all the eggs in one basket which is why I’ll be doing a workshop at Liberty States about box sets and also joining some friends to offer a similar workshop at the National RWA Conference.

And speaking of eggs and baskets, I’m trying something new with some fabulous writers – a story bundle! Here is the info on it and I hope you’ll take a moment to try it out.
