What would you do to get the truth?

I’m not a twin so I can’t say based on real-life experience, but there are lots of stories about twins having a very special connection. It was that concept that inspired the story in Cold Case Reopened. The heroine, Rhea Reilly, is a twin whose sister has been declared dead only Rhea still feels her sister and wants the police to reopen her case. The hero, Jackson Whitaker, is a detective who has been assigned to convince Rhea to drop the case, but when he meets her and sees the evidence she gathered, he realizes that he has to reopen the case and find out what really happened to Rhea’s sister Selene. Today I’ve got a little teaser for you from the beginning of Cold Case Reopened.

Teaser

It was hard to believe that such beauty possibly held unspeakable evil.

Rhea Reilly stood on the shore of the mountain lake where six months earlier her twin sister, Selene, had disappeared on a cold fall night.
Her artist’s eye took in the scene before her. The waters of the lake sparkled like diamonds beneath a sunny cerulean sky. At the farthest end of the lake, the waters tumbled over a spillway for the dam that held back a rush of water during a spring thaw or heavy rain. In the distance, ragged mountains leaped into the sky, still frosted with the remnants of winter snow at the highest elevations.

Normally she would have savored painting such a lovely sight, but not today, when it might be her sister’s watery tomb.
Rhea hugged her arms tight around herself, closed her eyes and listened to the soft lap of the water against the rocky shores of the lake. Imagined Selene standing there that fateful night, tapping out the message she’d sent to Rhea.

I can’t take it anymore. I can’t. I’m finally going to do something about it.

The police had taken that text to mean that Selene had decided to end her life that night, right there on the shores of those stunningly beautiful mountain waters. But Rhea wasn’t convinced.

Thoughts About a New Book

I’m busy writing my bible for the first book in the South Beach Security: K-9 Division series for Harlequin Intrigue, tentatively titled Rescue at Redlands. This book is about the owner of a racehorse stable who is being attacked, possibly because she’s supposed to testify against a former trainer who is accused of doping racehorses. The SBS K-9 officer has to secure her racing stables and keep her from harm. One of the things I do to get started is to research where the book will be set and what the characters will look like. I also look for images I can share with you to create the story’s mood, like what I did for you in some of my video trailers. Here are some images that had crated the mood for Decoy Training, my very first K-9 story (besides the free read for Deadly Chase).

Exciting Adventure on the Jersey Shore

On this Throwback Thursday, I’m sharing some video I took when hubby and I ran across a school of skates! Since the weather was so nice we were taking a long walk and on our return trip over the Shark River Bridge, we caught sight of a large school of bait fish jumping out of the water. We decided to watch the bait fish to see if anything big would come to chase after them, like a dolphin. Nothing came to eat the bait fish but then we spotted two small skates in the water. A few seconds later, however, we saw a school of over a dozen skates gliding through the water. I managed to get out my phone and capture some video of this amazing sight! I so love being this close to nature and being able to see things like this right on my doorstep. It’s one of the reasons I set the At the Shore series in this area.

Humpday Fun at the Beach

When my fur baby Slate heard that there was a sandcastle building contest going on today at the beach, he insisted that he had to go! LOL! He’s a good baby, but I can’t picture him at the beach. Hubby and I are contemplating teaching him to walk on a leash since he loves being outside on our little balcony. I’ll let you know how that’s going.

On the writing front, if you’ll be in the Trumball, CT area on Saturday, I’d love for you to come visit with me at Romanticonn at the Trumball Marriott. The book signing starts at 12 pm and runs until 4 pm. There is a fee for attendance, but I think you’ll love visiting with so many other authors and vendors at the event. Trey Gonzalez from South Beach Security

I spent the morning scrolling through photos of actors to try to find the right one I’d cast as Trey Gonzalez, an undercover detective who is the grandson of the founder of the South Beach Beach Security agency that is at the heart of my upcoming new series for Harlequin Intrigue. Trey is the hero of the first book in the series – Lost in Little Havana – but you will see him in all of the books in the series, including the spin-off K-9 Division stories featuring those adorable dogs Bongo, Missy, Mango, and Butter.

After searching high and low, I decided Christian Bale was a good choice even though Trey has blue-green eyes. Bale’s intensity is what made me pick him and I’ve loved watching him in many movies from Batman Begins to one of my favs Ford v Ferrari. What about you? Are you a fan? Could you see Bale playing the role of an undercover detective or head of a private security agency?
