#FreebieFriday – Some Free Reads For You!

April showers bring May Flowers but they also bring some free time for you to just kick back, pour yourself a cup of coffee, and do some reading. So here are some free reads you can download. All I ask is that you leave an honest review because those really do help authors!

P.S. – I am kind of tired of all the rain, but not the books! LOL! I’m hoping the sun will be out soon so I can plant some May flowers!

#ThrowbackThursday – A Sign of the Times

We try to get our exercise daily by taking a walk. A week or so ago it was nice enough to do a stroll and we walked all the way to the entrance of Asbury Park. I say entrance because we could not go any farther than the casino since it and everything beyond it was closed as this sign of the times indicated.

#WriteWed – Paradise is a Library

I’ve not only been busy writing but also reading. Books were always my escape and a joy in my life. Because of that, I have to agree with Jose Luis Borges that paradise has to be some kind of library.

#TuesdayTip – An Easy Craft Project – Dressing Up a Water Bottle

As you may have seen from past blog posts or my social media, I love to do craft projects both big and small. Since you may have some time on your hands, I figured you might need a quick and easy craft project. Plus, you may have a lot of these items already around the house!

In my case, I have a few of these bottles that we use for water when we’re having people over for dinner or parties. They are a perfect size and if you’re going somewhere, they’re great because of their tops. The bottles are relatively inexpensive at IKEA, but you can also spend a little more and get one filled with tasty lemonade. Instead of recycling, upcycle them for use. Today I’m going to show you how to dress one up a little. I chose a beach theme because it’ll fit in well with my new house, but you can substitute other items for the decoration, like small flowers, beads, etc.

Dressing Up a Water Bottle

Materials:

Cord/Twine. I used some jute I had hanging around, but you can use cotton cord as well.
1 bottle
Seashells and/or flowers
Glue and/or Glue Gun
Scissors
Craft supplies

Directions:

I have a 16-inch tall bottle so I cut the cord into two 32 inch pieces. The length of the cord will depend on the length of your bottle.

Tie the cord around the neck of the bottle. You will have 4 cords hanging down. Two will be filler cords at the center of your knots. The outside two cords are the ones you will use to make the macrame knots.

You are going to do a basic macrame knot – the square half knot. This is one of the easiest knots to do and you can use it to make bracelets and other projects. The thing to keep in mind is that you need to alternate between left and right-facing knots in order to keep the design from swirling.

The best way to describe the knot is to think of it as a figure eight with one cord going over the two filler cords and the other under it. For the right-facing half-knot the cord on the right will go over the filler cords. For the left-facing half-knot the cord on the left will go over the filler cords.

Repeat the alternating left and right-facing half-knots until you get to the length you desire.

When you reach your desired length, it’s time for the glue. You can use something like E6000 Clear which is a great glue for more permanent bonding. Because of time constraints, I used a glue gun.

Spread glue down the back of the macrame knots and hold it to the bottle, being sure to center the knots. If you’re using the E6000 glue, you may need to tack the cord down with masking tape until the glue dries completely. Also, glue down the loose unknotted cords for another inch or so. You are going to cover these with your decorations.

It’s time for the seashells. I always collect shells on the beach for my projects and these are some from my collection. I love the swirly one – a moon shell – and often find them along the beach. If you don’t have shells you can substitute flowers, silk or dried, buttons, beads. Anything that suits your fancy.

Place glue on the backs of the shells and arrange them over the unknotted cords. The glue gun will work more quickly than the E6000 glue and again, if using the glue, you may need to hold each one in place for a few seconds until it holds.

And that’s it! You’re done! I may add a few small beads amongst the shells for color, but otherwise, I kind of like how the bottle came out.

#ManCrushMonday – Carlo from NEVER A BRIDE

Sometimes when you create a character they stay with you for more than just their story. That’s what happened with Carlo from NEVER A BRIDE. From the moment that he came on the scene in the first book in the series, ONE SUMMER NIGHT, Carlo resonated with me and I loved watching him grow with every book in the series. I’m also loving the idea of continuing the series with Carlo and his brothers, Army Ranger Tomas and baby brother Paolo who’s fallen for an older woman. If you’re thinking Tracy, the last of the friends, you may be right! LOL!

Anyway, here’s Carlo for you. I dare you to resist him.

#FridayFunday – What Happens When You Mix…

What happens when you mix someone with too much time during “the Pause”, someone who is “cheap, cheap, cheap”, and someone who likes to work with their hands? You get me and this convertible coffee table! Actually, since retiring to write full-time, I have more time for not only doing the writing but projects I’ve been wanting to do for some time. But “the Pause” made it tough to find some of the materials for converting a coffee table that I had into this convertible table. I had already researched and bought the hinges, but the coffee table I was salvaging (hence the cheap, cheap, cheap) didn’t have a bottom shelf. I ended up using an old Ikea coffee table that I had planned to toss and chopping it down to make the bottom shelf. New coats of paint on the table sides and bottom shelf and voila! An easy way to have our casual Friday dinners when we usually order out and sit on the couch. No more hunching over. Now we just lift the tabletop and sit comfortably to eat take-out. What do you think?

#ThrowbackThursday – A Lifetime Ago

Even though it’s only been about four months since I retired from my law career, it seems like a lifetime ago already. So much has happened in that time, both personally and professionally. Good things, except of course for this coronavirus situation. I pray that all of you are safe and sound during this trying time. Today’s throwback is to the start of that legal career when I took part in the National Administrative Law Moot Court Competition. Very lawyerly looking with the tie, right? I was wearing a skirt because back then it was not considered acceptable for women to wear pants to the courtroom. Sigh. How Neanderthal. What can I say? It was and sadly still is at times, a boy’s club. I’m glad I’m out of that profession and in a woman-friendly one: Romance Novels.
