#ThrowbackThursday South Beach Memories & Following Jane

It’s another Throwback Thursday and today I’m taking you back to some fun memories in Miami! We went there for a number of years with our daughter and stayed in South Beach. Those trips inspired a number of books set there, including my contribution to the Dangerous Dozen Romantic Suspense Boxed Set, TO CATCH HER MAN.

I loved walking around and snapping pictures of all the different places that I would one day incorporate into my books. One of the places we visited and which is mentioned in TO CATCH HER MAN, is the Miami Seaquarium. I remember visiting as a child and going home with a giant stuffed Flipper plush doll.

During one of our trips my daughter and I hammed it up as a diver and his mermaid catch!

Speaking of my daughter, her debut novel, FOLLOWING JANE, is getting really nice reviews and is now specially priced for .99 cents. I hope you’ll take a moment to check it out.

#WriteWed Embracing Indie & Getting Organized

Last year was a crazy and brutal year publishing-wise. Although I had rights back to a number of books, including some of my favorites, I was unable to really focus on releasing them and going indie.

Not so this year. My goal this year was to embrace indie publishing and to do that I had to get organized. Big sigh. Anyone who has visited my home office knows organized is not a word to be used to describe my writing life. A big part of the reason is the lack of time that I have for it.

But lack of time doesn’t mean that you can’t get it done. It just means that you have to learn how to do it more efficiently. Going indie also meant that I had to establish my own schedules for what I wanted to do and when.

Thanks to my awesome buddy and awesome fellow writer Nisha Sharma, I’ve gotten organized. Or at least my knapsack and planner have.

Here’s what they look like now, including an awesome DREAM BIG bracelet thingie I got at the fabulous OG Surf and Skate shop in Neptune, NJ.
organized

This has been really working for me because (1) I’m very visual and need to see things and (2) I’m still a needy kid inside who has to have little gold stars to tell her she’s doing okay.

LOL! So as you can see, there have been a number of stars on there as I complete the tasks I’ve scheduled. I keep the tasks on color-coded flags so I can move them around if need be.

Of course, there is just one thing I forgot to put on there and which totally belongs: Our Lucky 7 Bad Boys NY Times and USA Today achievement.

I will have to go and add that now and plan for even more good news like that. It’s going to be a lot of work this year, but like my mother always told me, “Nothing worthwhile is ever easy.”

#TeaserTuesday TO CATCH HER MAN #RomanticSuspense

To Catch Her Man #RomanticSuspenseIn TORI GOT LUCKY, you got to meet a number of twentysomething friends who were all searching for different things in their lives.

As you might gather from the title, Tori was lucky enough to find exactly what she needed her the man in her life, her family and her friends, Adriana, Juliana and Sylvia.

Tori’s friends, however, still had to follow their destinies and achieve the kind of happily-ever-after that Tori was lucky enough to get.

TO CATCH HER MAN is Sylvia’s story and I was so excited to be able to write it. TO CATCH HER MAN is darker and more dangerous than TORI GOT LUCKY. I guess that’s why we’re including it in the Dangerous Dozen Romantic Suspense Boxed set.

In this story, Sylvia is trying to deal with her attraction to undercover detective Carlos Ramirez. Worse yet, someone is accusing Carlos of being dirty and Sylvia is assigned the story and must uncover the truth about the accusation. Her investigation will risk her growing relationship with Carlos, but also the reputation of a hero cop who was killed while on an assignment. I hope you’ll like this emotionally charged and suspenseful story, but also a sexy and at times lighthearted story.

TO CATCH HER MAN will be available as a standalone release in late March. For now, you can get it as part of the Dangerous Dozen Romantic Suspense Boxed set.

Teaser

Chapter 1

Sylvia Amenabar’s life was anything but ordinary thanks to her crazy three best friends, a mother who was a witch, and an undercover detective with whom she had yet to get under the covers.

But Sylvia loved her less than fairy tale life and wouldn’t change anything about it except possibly the part about not being beneath the covers with Carlos, the Bad Boy detective who had turned out to be a Prince. Come to think of it, on top of the covers or on the floor or even on the kitchen counter would do.

In reality, anywhere would do since all Sylvia could think about was having wild monkey sex with Carlos once he got out of the hospital. Of course, Carlos might interpret the having sex part as meaning more than just having sex, which complicated things.

Sylvia wasn’t sure that she was ready for anything more involved. Her friends, who were all now happily in the throes of committed relationships, would say she had intimacy issues and they would be totally right.

She didn’t trust men. As far as she was concerned, men were dogs. She would allow, however, for a few rare exceptions. The problem was that she didn’t know enough about Carlos to be able to decide if he was one of those exceptions. That was the reason why she wasn’t ready for anything hinting at a Happily-Ever-After kind of ending with him. But she was ready for sex with him. More than ready for it.

As her mother had warned her months earlier, Sylvia had met a man who had started an itch. Maybe sex with Carlos would satisfy that itch, although her mama, witch that she was for putting such a curse on her, would argue that with some men not even sex was enough.

Not that her mama was any kind of expert on that, Sylvia thought as she walked to Carlos’s hospital room in Miami’s Jackson Memorial.

Thirty years earlier, her mama had picked the absolutely wrong man. One who had impregnated her and then skipped out on most of his fatherly duties. She should be grateful that her father had at least provided for her financially, but that hadn’t made up for the missing dad on birthdays, holidays, and on those days when life wore you down and you needed someone to hold onto.

Her mama had always been that someone and of course, her friends. They had been there for her nearly a month earlier when Carlos had been shot protecting her.

Which added guilt with a capital G to the list of reasons why she wasn’t necessarily ready for anything more serious with Carlos. Her first investigative report on drug dealing in the South Beach hotspots had nearly gotten Carlos killed when he had used his body as a shield when the drug dealers had opened fire. They had been angry that her article in the glossy monthly magazine had created increased scrutiny on them and a drop in business.

Carlos, she thought, pausing at his door and taking a deep breath. Prince or a Bad Boy Frog? she asked herself yet again, but told herself she didn’t have to make that decision right at that moment.

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day & #ManCandyMonday

It’s St. Patrick’s Day and I hope you all have a happy one. My Celtic ancestors are screaming for me to honor the day by sharing someone who has Irish roots! (Although I’m a Gallego, not from Ireland).

Who better than sexy Chris Evans! Before Chris was Captain America, he caught my eye in Cellular with Kim Basinger. An awesome film if you haven’t seen it yet. Chris has also appeared in a number of other movies, including the Fantastic Four as the Torch and a number of indie films.

Thanks to the Captain America Fan Page for this shot of Chris from the first Captain America movie.

#ThrowbackThursday & NY Times & USA TODAY Baby!

It’s Throwback Thursday and I’m sharing a happy writing moment from my life.

In 2012 I was nominated for a RITA in the Paranormal Romance category for THE LOST. It was so awesome! The RITAs are kind of like the OSCARs of the movie world.

I got to meet so many wonderful people, including Joyce Lamb who is one of my Dangerous Dozen buddies. Here’s a picture of Joyce and Grace Burrows that I snapped at one of the RITA-related events.

It was so exciting! My friends and publisher sent me these amazing flowers and my daughter sent me tasty chocolate-covered strawberries. The little dog in the photo is Spottie, who went with me to all the festivities. Spottie was the name of the hero’s beagle in THE LOST.

But now it’s time for some amazing news!

The Lucky 7 Bad Boys Contemporary Romance Boxed Set has hit both the NY Times and USA Today bestseller lists! We are so excited!!!

We are at #41 on the USA Today list and on the NY Times Bestseller list that comes out on Sunday, we will be #11 on the e-book list and #16 on the combined print and e-book list.

WOOO HOOO!!! Thank you all so much for your support for this set. Without you it would not have been possible!

It’s #HumpDay & #WriteWed Captain America & Writing Retreats

My writing friends and I will often “get away” for writing retreats. Sometimes it’s just a night of gabbing. Occasionally we can get away for a weekend. More rare are extended outings with other writers. I’m lucky if I can do one of those extended outings once every three or four years.

In 2012, I was lucky enough to get invited to teach a Master Class at the Low Country Romance Writers. It was great to share what I knew about social media as well as legal issues for writers. I met a great group of people and you may recognize some of them in the photo from my Lucky 7 Bad Boys and Dangerous Dozen collaborations, namely Virna DePaul and Nina Bruhns.

The Writing Retreat Gang from Low Country Romance Writers

Here is a photo of two of my writing buddies, Julia Amante and Sylvia Mendoza, from another retreat in Vegas! I’ve known Julie and Sylvia for nearly 15 years and love getting together with them! We share so much in common and being with them is always inspiring. In fact, it was a trip many years ago that inspired THE PRINCE’S GAMBLE when they dared me to incorporate elements of our writing weekend into a story. I know that Red Rock Canyon, where we took this photo, will be the setting for a scene in a future romantic suspense novel. It just begs for an exciting chase scene!

Because it’s Hump Day, you may need a little excitement to get you up and over the hump! LOL! So here’s a trailer from Captain America to help. I can’t wait to see this movie. I just love Chris Evans. I have since he was in Cellular.

Chicken & Rice #Recipe #TeaserTuesday

Since it’s Teaser Tuesday, here’s a little something from my contribution to the Lucky 7 Bad Boys Contemporary Romance Boxed Set.

Teaser from The Perfect Mix – Lucky 7 Bad Boys Boxed Set

The hot sting of the spray beat against Rey’s shoulders, pounding away the soreness from the six straight hours of hard labor he had put in after overseeing all the jobs he had in progress and the meeting with Bianca and Eduardo.

He leaned his hands against the tiled wall and let the massaging stream pulsate against the muscles of his chest. Slowly the heat soaked in and relieved the tension he had been feeling since that afternoon and Bianca.

He had done as he promised and dropped off the blueprints at the local copy center. Luckily they had been relatively quiet and had been able to sneak in the job right on the spot. Normally, he would have tackled the bid immediately, but in the back of his mind was the disturbing thought that he should forget about this project. He was worried it would bring nothing but trouble.

But as he stood there, the steaming water sluicing over his body and easing an assortment of aches and pains, he admitted that it was Bianca and not the project that had him concerned.

The project itself was actually a dream. The building had immense potential and its location was really prime. How many places sat on palisades overlooking one of the best and most coveted views in the world?

From the restaurant, the Manhattan skyline was visible as far as you could see and as he knew from the view from his own home, it was magical at night. He still worried, however, that the location and the chance to work on a really exciting project just wasn’t enough to make up for having to deal with Bianca.

She was just too damn distracting and annoying.

Not that he hadn’t worked for an attractive woman before. He had on dozens of occasions. He could even deal with the fact that she found him attractive. That flare of interest on her end had been impossible to ignore. He had learned to deal with that kind of reaction from women since he had looked in a mirror lately. Not that he usually gave much thought to his physical attributes. He’d done nothing to earn those. They were just a case of genetics.

He’d rather that people judged him by what he had accomplished on his own, like building a successful contracting business.

Plus, he prided himself on being interested in a woman based on more than just her looks. When he got involved with a woman, he wanted someone who appealed to him on a number of levels. Things like a reasonable amount of intelligence, a sense of humor, and a whole bunch of other things he couldn’t name at the moment.

Which was why he needed to stay far far away from Bianca.

To say she was attractive was an understatement. She was of average height, but that was where the use of the word average stopped. Her face was stunning, an exotic blend of seduction and innocence. Today she had been the seductress with her red lipstick and smoky eye makeup. Her rich caramel brown hair had been loose and tousled, almost begging for a man’s hands to tunnel through it and smooth it out. But he could picture Bianca looking all innocent, her face free of makeup with that irresistible girl next door thing going on. Her dark mane of hair up in a ponytail, swinging against the elegant length of her neck. Her green eyes wide and inviting.
Her looks were not the only enigma she presented.

He had called her “princess” for a number of reasons that morning. With her regal bearing, jewelry, and the expensive clothes, she wore her class as well as any royal. But he couldn’t imagine that most princesses liked to get their hands dirty. Still, he knew she used those hands every day as a chef. The one time he had touched her today to shake her hand, the slight roughness of her palm had proven to him she wasn’t above manual labor.

Since it was too easy to imagine that hand touching him again, running all along his body, making him crazy hard and needy, he drove that idea out of his head by blasting on the cold water until he was shivering and all thoughts of Bianca had been cleansed from his mind and body.

Then and only then did he exit the shower and dress, hoping to make it an early night.

Chicken and Rice Recipe

I hope you enjoyed that little teaser! As I’ve mentioned, the heroine in The Perfect Mix is a chef probably because I love to cook as well. Plus, food is a very sensual thing so it’s perfect for getting Rey and Bianca together.

This is my recipe for Chicken and Rice, a must have in any Latin kitchen. I’ve found that the easiest way to make it is in the oven, although you start it on the stove. If you have Corningware, Le Crueset or some other stove to oven cookware, even better. Who wants to spend time cleaning pots!

Ingredients

One fryer chicken, cut into pieces
Olive oil
2 small cans tomato sauce
1 cup chopped red & green peppers
1 cup chopped onions
2 cloves garlic minced
2 cups white rice
2 cups water
1 cup white wine
1 tsp BIJOL (this is a coloring agent you can find in the Latin cooking section of your market)
1 chorizo (also in the Latin section)
2 bay leaves
1 tsp oregano
Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

Preheat oven to 350.

In your pot, put in a little olive oil and brown the chicken. Remove and set to the side.

In the same pot, add the red and green peppers and saute for about 5 minutes. Then add the chorizo and the onions. Saute for another 5 and add the garlic for just a minute. Then add the tomato sauce, bay leaves, oregano and wine.

Simmer for about 15 minutes to get rid of the raw tomato taste. Add salt and pepper to taste. Then add the 2 cups water and also, the Bijol. Give it a stir and add the rice. Stir again to mix and then add the chicken pieces. Arrange the chicken pieces so they are spread throughout the pot.

If you don’t have stove to oven cookware, make it in a regular pan and then move it a large enough rectangular aluminum foil pan.

Place the mixture in the oven and cover tightly. Cook for about 30 to 45 minutes until all the water is absorbed.

To serve, fluff the rice and also add canned peas and some sliced roasted red peppers.

If you can’t imagine eating peas straight out of the can, you can add frozen peas to the mixture in the oven during the last ten minutes of cooking.

Hope you enjoy this recipe!
