Wicked Wednesday – FURY CALLS

First of all, congrats to PC Cast for winning the RT Best Nocturne of 2009! It was an honor to have FURY CALLS nominated with her novel and those of my other Nocturne buddies.

FURY CALLS is a book of my heart and on its way to being out-of-print. I wanted to share this excerpt with you from the novel, which was selected by CATAROMANCE as the Best Nocturne of 2009.

In this scene we meet the villain of the piece, a wicked vampire by the name of Sun-Tze Lee. For over a century he has been controlling Foley, the apparent owner of The Blood Bank, that dark and dangerous hangout in The Calling Vampire novels. I loved crafting such an awful villain and I mean truly truly awful. I know the violence was a little too much for some, but I thought it essential for the story since I wanted to show to readers how both Blake and Foley survive situations that would break lesser men (or should I say vamps?)

Travel Tuesday – A Visit to Windsor

We took a lovely train ride out to Windsor to see Windsor Castle and the quaint town nearby, also the home to Eton, the exclusive school. Weather was a bit dreary, but not too cold. Unfortunately, Her Majesty was in residence which meant we could go on the castle grounds for free, but were unable to get into any of her “apartments.” Major bummer as I was dying to see the various bedrooms, kitchens, dining areas, etc. that we had seen on the PBS special about a year in the life of Windsor Castle.

Nevertheless, we were able to walk around all the grounds and see St. George’s Chapel. The guards were patrolling all over the area and are quite attractive in their bright red coats and furry hats. Real guns — no one will mess with them.

The gardens and areas in and around Windsor Castle are lovely. Well-kept and so green thanks to the spring rains. If you see the picture of the entrance to the Moat Path in the slide show below, it is now the entrance to the gardens that have replaced the moat.

We then headed to town where we had fish and chips in a delightful pub and walked around town before returning to London. The train ride was nice and it was a good way to also get a glimpse of the suburbs and countryside around London.

Guilty Pleasures Monday – Jeff Gordon

I’m back from the RT BookReviews Convention in lovely Columbus, Ohio. I had such a nice time there and it was wonderful to meet those of you who attended or were in the area for the book fair! I’ll have some photos from the event as well as more author interviews over the next few weeks.

But today it’s back to our Guilty Pleasures!

I know lots of you are NASCAR fans and so here is a familar face for you – Jeff Gordon!

This shot is from one of those first Pepsi spots featuring Jeff. Jeff is currently sitting in 10th place in the SPRINT Cup Series, but just 5 points behind the leader Jimmie Johnson (another cutie from what I can tell!).

I can’t wait to see how it turns out, but look for more NASCAR cuties in the future.

Fun Friday – Greetings from Columbus, Ohio

I am so sorry that I haven’t posted the last two days, but I was having issues getting a clean Internet connection as I am on the road again . . .

This time I am in lovely Columbus, Ohio at the 2010 RT BookReview Convention. Having a wonderful time meeting both new and old friends. You can see me here with my lovely editor Selina Mclemore and some of those friends.

Seriously though, those are some of the fabulous Ellora’s Cave Men at the Wednesday night ball.

I’ve been busy doing a number of panels and also taking the time to interview some of favorite authors and friends. Travel Tuesday – Stonehenge

If you’re like me, you’ve got a list of places you’d like to see sometime in your life — Grand Canyon, Mt. Rushmore, Great Wall of China, etc. and possibly also Stonehenge.

Well, I’m so happy I could take Stonehenge off the list because we took a tour to see it during our visit to London. It took about an hour and a half to get there, but it was worth the trip since we got to see the English countryside and then went on to see Bath (more on that in another post).

Some interesting things about Stonehenge. The word “henge” derives from either “hanging” or “hinge” which makes sense considering how the stones hang on each other.

Even before Stonehenge was built, the area was used as a burial place and there are several burial mounds in and around Stonehenge. Eventually, the closer you got to be buried next to the stones, the more important you were. In this shot from the bus (a little blurry), you can see a burial mound off to the right of the photo. The mounds are known as barrows.

It’s believed that construction at this site began around 3100 BC and continued until about 1600 BC. Archaelogists believe the site was constructed as a monument by early civilizations and the connection to Druids apparently comes much later in the history of the monument.

This shot was taken from what is known as the “Heelstone” (which you can see in the album as the one lone stone apart from the monument). The smaller stone laying down in front is the “slaughter stone.”

Sadly, you can no longer touch the stones or get very close to them. It would have been nice to get in the center and see what kind of energy, if any, exists there. Unfortunately, that was not possible and so the only thing we felt was the cold wind blowing along the fields.

Guilty Pleasures Monday – Blast from the Past Burt Reynolds

Even as a young woman I always thought Burt Reynolds was hot. There was something totally Bad Boy about him and he had the kind of dark looks and athletic build that I like. Then he confirmed his Bad Boy status by posing in the nude for Cosmo.

Mind you, that pose was the stuff that said Women’s Lib had arrived. For years men had salivated over Playboy centerfolds and now it was Our Turn – We Are Women Hear Us Roar!

So, today’s Guilty Pleasure Monday is that piece of American History and Burt in all his hirsute glory.

On a more serious note, every Monday we have our Guilty Pleasures, some guiltier than others. Some might say that objectifying men in this fashion is as bad as men objectifying women in those centerfolds. Do you agree or do you think it’s okay to appreciate a beautiful form as long as it’s not for prurient purposes?

Inquiring minds want to know on this wet and dreary Monday morning.

Fun Friday – The Fashionista is Back!

It’s that time of year when women’s thoughts turn to . . .

BASEBALL!!

For many many many (did you get that – many!) years of my life, I was one of the guys because there was a dearth of “feminine” sports apparel. No more! Now women can cheer their teams on in style.

Also wanted to leave you with this photo that I shot on the way to work. The flowers are up in Bryant Park! If you’re itching to get out into your garden, just remember to check and make sure you’re past getting a killing frost. Also remember that some plants – like tomatoes, basil and peppers — really hate even chilly weather. If you need to put your hands in the soil, go with pansies and other cool weather choices for now. Also think about using combos like these pinks and blue-purples. Butterflies, bees and hummingbirds love these particular colors.
