#WriteWed Inspiration for Tommy in ONE SPECIAL NIGHT

It’s been a while since I wrote DANGER CALLS in The Calling Vampire Novel series. The hero in that story, Sebastian Reyes, is a computer specialist and definitely not the kind of big, bad ass alpha hero that you see in a lot of paranormal romances.

That was a tough call for me, but I knew that Sebastian was the perfect man to deal with the heroine in that book, Dr. Melissa Danvers. She needed a sensitive man who could understand her and be supportive. A man who wouldn’t mind being younger and dealing with a woman whose profession required a lot of time away from home.

Not to mention a lot of time being the keeper to vampire Ryder Latimer.

Sebastian was very much a beta hero when I wrote him, but morphed into a slightly more alpha hero during revisions on the book.

Jasmine “Doc” Reyes is very similar to Melissa Danvers in some respects. Driven, compassionate and not above risking her life for others. Serious, maybe too serious, at times.

I knew she needed a man who would make her smile and could help her heal. She needed someone strong and protective, but not in that big macho alpha kind of way.

Enter Tommy de Salvo with his big smile and even bigger sense of humor. Tommy is the kind of man who can take away the shadows in Jasmine’s eyes and help her feel whole again.

Tommy is the kind of hero that I wanted Sebastian to be, but just couldn’t get away with in a dark paranormal story.

In ONE SPECIAL NIGHT, a sexy tale of two strangers coming together, it was totally possible to finally explore a very different kind of hero. I hope you’ll take a chance and check out this novella.

#TeaserTuesday #Vampire Reborn Novella

I’ve got an excerpt for you today from Vampire Reborn, a novella in The Calling is Reborn Vampire Novel series. This is a series of my heart and I love the direction the stories are taking! Here’s a little blurb for Vampire Reborn:

A life alone . . .

For nearly two centuries, vampire Ryder Latimer had lived alone, uncomfortable in the vampire world and unloved in the human world. Ryder had never dared hope that he’d find love in his endless existence.

Brought together . . .

Fate brought FBI Agent Diana Reyes into Ryder’s world and in the five years since they met, they’ve battled long and hard for a life together. With Ryder’s love, Diana has climbed out of a dark abyss that had kept her prisoner for far too long.

A Vampire Reborn . . .

It’s been a month since Diana and Ryder became man and wife. A month since Ryder almost lost his life to protect his wife and their newborn child. But now something is happening in Ryder’s body that is making him more human at a time when he needs to be at full vampire strength to protect his loved ones.

Will fear and doubt drive Ryder to embrace his vampire self and be reborn at the cost of his new family? Or will Diana’s love battle back the darkness that threatens?

Chapter 1

The first kill had been a spur of the moment decision and had brought too much scrutiny.

A mistake that would not be repeated.

It had taken a month of careful scouting to get to this point. A month of identifying the individuals who possessed sacred life forces and learning their habits, including this little meeting at the local santero’s shop in Spanish Harlem. A real santero gifted with enormous powers unlike some of the fakes who dotted the landscape of the barrio.

But the santero wasn’t going to the be first one taken.

The weakest link was always the easiest and this time, the evidence of what had been done would not be as obvious as with the slain Slayer Council member.

She strolled out of the santero’s shop with the other gifted ones, smiling almost beatifically. She really was very beautiful, with flawless coffee-colored skin and a body meant for sin. But her beauty would not save her. If anything, it would increase the enjoyment of what was to follow and the pain she would suffer.

Following behind at a discreet distance, hunting her, stimulated the growing core of blackness inside.

The thrill of the chase brought intense excitement, especially as she waved her friends goodbye and moved off on her own.

She never bothered to look around, even in the neighborhood that was so-so at best.

Youth never understood their own mortality.

Another block and there was a little more distance from friends and the santero’s shop. They were also a little closer to the small storefront just off the FDR drive where everything was waiting for her arrival and in a way, her departure.

Speeding up, the distance between them shortened and as if finally sensing a presence, she nervously looked over her shoulder. She offered an uneasy smile for a brief moment and increased her pace, but it was too late.

With a surge of speed, she was imprisoned.

A sharp blast of power made her knees buckle and she fell to the ground.

Lifting her, she was slight and her weight seemed almost non-existent, but power radiated from every cell in her body.

Delicious.

After tonight, there would be no turning back. No escaping the path to soul-eating darkness. It would be worth it for the incredible mind-blowing power to be possessed.

It would be as it should have been all along.

Nothing could stop it now.

TO LOVE AND SERVE from The Calling\Reborn Vampire NovelsToday’s free read is a little different! We’re back to the dark side with this excerpt from TO LOVE AND SERVE.

Why the darkness today? Well, next month The Calling\Reborn celebrates it’s 10th anniversary and I’ll be having a release of a new novella, VAMPIRE REBORN, on March 18th to celebrate. FIGHT FOR LOVE, the continuation of the story which begins in VAMPIRE REBORN will be out in the early summer.

Some of you have asked if the books in the REBORN series are re-releases of the earlier books from The Calling series. Nope, the REBORN series books are all new, but with the characters you loved from The Calling. I had to change the name of the series when I switched publishers.

For those of you who have written to say how much you’re liking the new books and seeing more of Diana and Ryder: THANK YOU! 🙂

The REBORN series is how I had first envisioned these stories and I am so glad I can continue the series with Diana and Ryder in each of the books in a major way. In fact, in VAMPIRE REBORN, you’re going to see a whole new side of Ryder. It will be a fight for Diana to reach him and bring him back from the darkness, but I know that these two will always find a way to work things out. But I do love making them fight for it, you know? LOL!

I hope you enjoy this read and have a great weekend.

Diana loved the feel of the wind racing past them and the crisp smells of the early autumn night as they drove through Manhattan. She raised her head and took in the silver, glittering stars and the familiar Lower East Side skyscrapers, golden against the night sky. But then Ryder turned off Park Ave too early, heading away from his club.

“I thought we were going to the Lair?” she asked, swiveling on the bench seat to face him.

He shrugged uneasily and his hands clenched and unclenched the large steering wheel. “Some stuff is up there, and I thought—”

“You didn’t want to trouble me with it.”

He shot her a quick glance. “I guess you can say that.”

She laid a hand on his thigh and noted the tension in his body. “You should know by now I’m not afraid of trouble, and if you need me—”

“I know. I can just ask. But tonight, I didn’t want any drama.”

“What if I said I want to go? Want to remember what it was like that first time…the magic I felt with you?” She stroked his thigh, feeling tension of another kind work into his big body.

He groaned and sneaked another quick peek. “You’re not playing fair, darlin’.”

She grinned and inched up on her knees until she was close enough to whisper in his ear, “Didn’t you say all was fair in love and war?”

For good measure she licked the shell of his ear and he growled his response. “Never let it be said I didn’t fulfill a lady’s desire.”

With a chuckle and another quick swipe of her tongue, she sat back down. “No one ever said I was a lady.”

Her humor calmed the tension beneath the surface and with a few quick turns, they were on their way to the Lair.

As Ryder wheeled the car into the alley next to the club, she sighed and said, “That was nice.” It was dark and intimate between the tall buildings, and for a moment she imagined them climbing into that big back seat for some sexiness.

When Ryder shot a heated glance back there, too, she realized his thoughts weren’t far from hers. She tucked her legs beneath her, kneeled, and leaned forward to brush a kiss against his lips.

He smiled and wrapped his arm around her waist, keeping her close as he returned her kiss. “I’m glad you enjoyed the ride.”

“I did. It brought back some nice memories.” She raked her fingers through his thick, cocoa brown hair.

“You didn’t have to do this.”

“I wanted to. I want you to be happy.” Cradling her cheek, he rubbed his thumb along the line of it before tipping his head to kiss her again.

It began as a simple touch, but he lingered, tracing the edges of her lips with his, tunneling his hand into her hair as he deepened the kiss. She accepted, opening her mouth and sampling him. How she’d hungered for his taste. Needed the feel of his strong body hard against hers.

Ryder didn’t want the moment to end. This was how it should be. Simple. Loving. Full of promise.

Diana broke from him only long enough to draw a breath, then she met his mouth again. Her lips were mobile and welcoming. The soft press of her breasts against his chest oh-so-tempting. But through the haze of his desire, the uneven beat of her heart registered. It was too unsteady, He held back, worried that the almost frantic rhythm was from more than passion.

When she bit his lower lip, he shuddered, fighting his need, but then a push of power grated against his vampire senses. An energy filled with both light and dark, and familiar now that he’d been touched by it.

Reluctantly he ended their kiss, leaned back, and glanced in the direction of the formidable energy.

Behind the Scenes at Grand Central Terminal

I’ve been scouting out places for the next stories in THE CALLING/REBORN series. The new stories — a novella tentatively titled VAMPIRE REBORN and a full-length novel, FIGHT FOR LOVE, — needed new places for their settings.

The funny thing is, as often as I walk through Grand Central Terminal, I’ve never used it for the books. Not anymore. There will be quite a number of scenes in the upcoming books set in the terminal, its tunnels, and way below, near the generators that power so many of the train lines that come in and out of Grand Central. It’s rumored that during World War II, these generators were so important to troop movements that any unauthorized visitors were to be shot on sight. In fact, two spies who had been sent to damage them were arrested by the FBI before they could execute their plan.

The attention to detail in the terminal is amazing as you can hopefully tell from these photos. Artwork at the gate entrances and even where you purchase your tickets. The constellation along the ceiling of the main concourse. The little rats scurrying up the posts to an awning over a Lexington Avenue entrance. The eagle perched on the corner of 42nd Street and Vanderbilt which was salvaged from an earlier station at the location.

So many amazing things as the station celebrates its 100th birthday this year!

Of course, things were not always so wonderful. The area in and around Grand Central was a mess during the mid-1970s when NYC was on the brink of bankruptcy. In 1975, Trump bought the nearby Commodore hotel and renovated it to one of the first Grand Hyatt hotels. He also did work on the exterior of Grand Central and by 1980, the area was being transformed and survived another near bankruptcy of the city in the mid-1990s.

Today, the terminal is one of the most visited tourist stops in the world, with nearly 22 million people visiting it yearly. It is the largest rail facility with 44 platforms serving 67 tracks. If you count rail yards, there are over 100 tracks. The terminal covers 48 acres and continues to be a main location for travel from various areas. There is now a project underway, the East Side Access project, that will give access to the Long Island Railroad.

I hope you enjoyed this behind the scenes look at Grand Central Terminal.

#ManCandyMonday Liam Hemsworth and Wedding Week #Giveaway

I know last week was tough for many of you since it was a holiday week, so this week we are continuing the Wedding Week Giveaway. Leave a comment on any blog for the week of November 25 to 29 for a chance to win a backlist title from THE CALLING/REBORN vampire novel series.

Today’s Man Candy Monday is hottie Liam Hemsworth who is burning up screens in the second film in the THE HUNGER GAMES franchise! Wow, those Hemsworth genes are amazing.

Actually, the more I look at him in this shot, the more I think he’d be a perfect David Harris, Diana’s ex-partner from the FBI. David is also one half of the romance in BORN TO LOVE, this month’s release in THE CALLING/REBORN vampire novel series.
