#ThrowbackThursday My Mom and Brother in Cuba

Cuba has been in the news a lot lately and for many of us who left, it’s been an emotional upheaval. People ask me all the time if I will go back and I have to explain how difficult the Cuban government makes it for us to visit. Besides, the Castros made my family’s life miserable, so why would I go back so long as they’re alive?

But, I thought I’d share this photo of my mom and brother in Cuba before the Castro dictatorship took hold and created the diasporo that exiled so many Cubans all around the world and in the United States.

#ThrowbackThursday Hubby & His Sister

I’ve been sharing a lot of photos of my family and today, I’m sharing one from hubby! We found this photo this week as we were looking through some old family photos at his mom’s house.

This is hubby and his sister. So cute! They still have the same faces.

#ThrowbackThursday Magical Days of Youth

Sometimes there are days that just stick out in your memory. These photos are from one of those days when we were kids. We hadn’t been in the U.S. all that long. Two or three years at the most. My family and some friends went out to Long Island for picnic. It was a glorious day and my sister, brother, and me all remember it well.

I remember those saddle shoes as well. I hated them. I’d always manage to scuff up the white and my saintly grandfather would clean and polish them to whiteness again.

And my parents, in immigrant fashion I think, always dressed sis and me alike. Kind of Sound of Music-style, right? Still, none of that could detract from the memories of this fun day.

In the first picture, that’s my mom in the middle. My dad is off to the left behind sis. My brother is in the maroon shirt behind me in the first photograph and then behind sis and me. A dear family friend, Albertico, is off to the far right in the first photo.

#ThrowbackThursday 1985 Villanova Champions

Still celebrating Villanova’s win in this year’s NCAA basketball championship. We’ve been waiting for 31 years since that Perfect Game to see the Best Championship Game Ever!

So this Throwback Thursday I’m sharing a commemorative collage I made to celebrate the 1985 Villanova Championship win. I’m already gathering newspapers and magazines to make a collage for this year!

Why so excited? Well, besides it being my alma mater, it just goes to show what teamwork and heart can do. Villanova is not a big school compared to North Carolina or some of the others. The guys on the team are not top NBA prospects, but they gave it their all and played like there was no tomorrow.

Who doesn’t love an underdog?

#ThrowbackThursday A Spring Dancer

Every time I see this photo, I think of my mom maybe getting all dressed up as a dancer to welcome spring. There’s just something about the flowers in her hair, costume, and hand that scream spring to me. What do you think?

#ThrowbackThursday The Easter Parade

When I was younger we lived in Queens and I remember coming into Manhattan several times for the Easter Parade. We would walk along Fifth Avenue seeing everyone in their Easter hats and then go by Rockefeller Center to check out all the lovely flowers. One year we went to see The Sound of Music and it was a very moving experience for me since I so identified with the Von Trapp family and having to leave home.

This is a picture of my mom, sister, me and my grandmother in the Rockefeller Center Promenade. Don’t look too happy in this one, but these trips were always fun!

#ThrowbackThursday My Celtic Grandparents

It seems like an apropos throwback to share a photo of my Celtic grandparents! Although my parents and my sibs and I were born in Cuba, all my grandparents were from Galicia in Spain. Galicia is one of the Celtic nations.

My dad’s side was Roman, though. His family was from Puentedeume, a coastal village originally settled by the Romans. That side of the family can apparently trace its ancestors to those Roman conquerors.

My mom’s side of the family is Celtic, however, and from a small town near Orense in Spain. I have lots of green-eyed and red-haired cousins on that side of the family. I guess that’s where my mom and I got our green eyes!

This is a picture of my mom and my grandparents. The picture was taken in Cuba either right before or after a trip back to Galicia to visit family.
