Caridad’s 10 Tips for Saving Money

It’s very daunting lately to visit the grocery store and gas station and see not only the increased prices on so many common items, but also the shrinkflation that’s happening on some products in order to keep the price the same. I’ve always been frugal (hubby would say cheap) but today I am more conscious than ever of how to save money. Today I’m sharing some tips on how you can save money as well.

1. Use Coupons. Even if you don’t clip paper coupons, most grocery stores have apps that you can download in order to take advantage of the store’s digital coupons. You can also add browser extensions like Capital One Shopping to see if you can get a deal on what you are buying online.

2. Check your weekly circular for sales. I check my circulars and make a list of sale items. If it’s a really good sale, I stock up on the items for my pantry and/or my freezer. Stick to the list and if you’re going to more than one store, plan your trip so that you’re being efficient in how you travel to save on fuel costs. Also, filling up your freezer is actually a good thing since a full freezer is more efficient.

If you’re a Big Box member, check out their sales. For example, Costco is running a number of sales on Back to School items! You could get a 12 count of Uniball gel pens for 7.99, a 40-piece school bundle for 10.99, or a 20 count of assorted colored Flair markers for 11.99 (I did resist!). Another secret for Costco: Look for products ending in .97 and with an asterisk on the label. That generally means it’s the lowest price you can get and also, that the item might be leaving the store soon.

3. Unsubscribe from services. If you’re no longer using a service, or rarely using it, unsubscribe, especially if you’re on a monthly billing cycle. If you’ve paid for the year, check to see when you can cancel and set a reminder in your calendar.

4. Wash with cold water and lower your water heater temperature. There are many efficient cold-water detergents and your water heater doesn’t really need to be above 120 degrees.

5. Switch your ceiling fan direction. In the summer, switch the fan to counter-clockwise so that the fan will blow cold air down on you.

6. Check your library for free online services. Many libraries have free e-book and video rental services for library patrons. Check and see what you can get with your library card. Of course, you can also take out print books, DVDs, and other items from the library.

7. Run full loads in the dishwasher and washing machine. Running full loads will save on your water and electrical bills and is also kinder to the environment by saving water. Also try doing running the dishwasher at night when there is less of a strain on the power grid.

8. Use Gasbuddy to find cheap gas prices. Gasbuddy is an app that tracks gas prices in your area. Use it to get the best possible price and save money.

9. Make your own fancy coffee. I stopped going to that coffee shop that shall not be named years ago when I realized that at roughly $5 a day I was spending nearly $2000 dollars per year on coffee. Hubby and I make a fresh pot of coffee every day and hubby got me a Nespresso Aerocinno that heats and froths my milk so I can make myself a latte.

10. Check out store brands and produce. I have to confess to loving Aldi for their produce. I can buy things for less and in more reasonable sizes than at a Big Box store. Aldi also has some great private brand products, but so do Wegman’s and Shop Rite. Check out store brands, especially when they are running sales. I recently purchased plastic zip bags for less than half of what the name brand would be and they were just as good!

I hope those tips were helpful! I should also add another tip: Ask yourself if you really need what you’re buying. I ask myself that all the time now that I’ve downsized and have less space. It helps keep the clutter down.

Amazing Tulip Fields at Holland Ridge Farms

As you know from other blog posts, I love gardening whether it’s flowers or vegetables. That’s why I love going to things like the Philly Flower Show (and yes I have tickets for it already!) It’s my dream to one day visit the tulip fields in Holland but in the meantime, I heard about Holland Ridge Farms and decided to check it out. It was amazing! Hubby and I walked through an immense field filled with rows and rows of tulips in bloom. While we walked, we also picked some tulips to take home. If you get a chance, definitely head out there to visit. Finally, I’ve been thinking of doing a story where one of the characters is a gardener. What do you think? P.S. – If you miss tulip season, look for sunflower picking in the fall!

It’s National Matchmaker Day!

As a romance author, I feel like this should be our official day since every time we write a book we’re matching up two people so they can find their happily-ever-after! So here’s to romance authors everywhere! But I bet you didn’t know these fun facts about matchmakers:

    1. According to Bustle, many cultures arranged matches because they felt young people were unable to make such a complicated decision.

    2. A matchmaker figured prominently in the motion picture Fiddler on the Roof.

    3. ArtCarved Bridal dreamed this day up to honor those who brought two people together for their happily ever after.

    4. In India, matchmaking is a multi-million dollar business and the top matchmaking companies account for millions of marriages!

But despite all those matchmaking facts, I still think that romance authors are the world’s best matchmakers!

A Cubano for National Sandwich Month

Our traditional Christmas Eve meal is roast pork and I always make a baked ham so that we can make Cuban sandwiches with the leftovers. Cuban sandwiches are tasty grilled sandwiches that contain pork, ham, and swiss cheese. They are made on Cuban bread which is a light bread made with lard and similar to Italian bread. The main difference is that Cuban bread is wider and the crust is much lighter, making it perfect for grilling. In both South Beach Love and The Family She Never Met the characters head to Little Havana to have some Cubanos!

Ingredients

3-4 thick slices roast pork
3-4 slices baked ham
2-3 slices Swiss cheese
yellow mustard
thin-sliced dill pickles
6-8″ long piece Cuban bread (or Italian bread/hero roll)

Directions

Slice open the bread and layer it with the roast pork, ham, swiss cheese, and pickles. Spread a thin layer of yellow mustard on the top slice of the bread. Personally, I never ate mine with pickles and mustard since I’m not a pickle fan. Lately, I have been eating my Cubanos with mustard. It does add some pep to the taste!

Close the sandwich and butter the outside of the bread. If you have a panini grill or other kind of sandwich grill, use that to flatten and toast the sandwich. You should let it cook for at least 10 minutes or so to let the meats and cheese heat up.

If you don’t have a panini grill, lay the sandwiches on a greased baking sheet. Cover the sandwiches with aluminum foil and place a heavy cast iron pan on top. Press down and bake in a 350-degree oven for about 15 minutes or so.

P.S. – Did you know that both Miami and Tampa lay claim to the invention of Cuban bread? You can click here to read more about the origins of Cuban bread in Tampa.

Tasty and Healthy Bistec Empanizado (Breaded Steak)

There are lots of tasty foods mentioned in South Beach Love, but not one of my favorites (I don’t think! LOL!)

Bistec Empanizado – aka Breaded Steak – is a staple dish in Cuban households, but it’s normally fried so we really didn’t eat it all that often since we were trying to be healthier.

But my daughter recently got an air-fryer and made some croquettes for us that made us believers since they were so crisp and tasty! Since our Cuisinart toaster oven has an air-fry mode, we decided to check it out and boy are we glad we did. It is totally possible to get a crisp coating on the steak or chicken or pork chops.

So today I’m sharing an easy recipe for a healthier and tasty breaded steak!

Ingredients

1 pound sirloin
2 eggs
1 tablespoon hot sauce (I use Cholula)
1 1/2 cups Italian-style bread crumbs
1/2 cup Panko bread crumbs
Cooking oil spray
Olive oil cooking spray
Salt and Pepper to taste

Directions

Thinly slice the sirloin steak. You can also use a cheaper cut like London broil. To slice the meat thinly, you might want to partially freeze the steak so it’s easier to handle. You should be able to get 3 or 4 slices from the steak.

Once you slice the meat, lay one piece at a time on a cutting board and place some plastic wrap over it. Then pound it with a meat tenderizer, making the slice of steak even thinner. It’s okay if the meat tears a little as you do this, but don’t pound it into burger meat.

Prepare the egg wash by beating the eggs, adding a few tablespoons of water, and the hot sauce. Beat together.

Prepare the bread crumbs. Place the panko into a gallon freezer bag and use a rolling pin to crush them a little as the crumbs are often too big. Add the Italian-style bread crumbs and mix. If you want, you can also add some grated parmesan cheese at this step, but that’s not traditional.

Place the steaks into the wash one by one and then into the bag with the bread crumbs. Coat the steaks and move to another plate. Repeat for all four steaks.

I usually do a second coating by running the steaks through the egg wash and bread crumbs again. Set them aside.

Preheat the air-fryer for at least 5-7 minutes. While you do this, prepare the air-fryer tray by spritzing it with cooking oil spray. Then lay the steaks on the tray and spritz them with the olive oil cooking spray. Flip and spritz the second side.

Once the oven/air-fryer has pre-heated, place the steaks inside and set a timer for 4 minutes. Check at 4 minutes and if golden brown, flip and cook for another 4 minutes.

Once golden brown on the second side, it’s time to eat!

You can use this same recipe to make breaded chicken cutlets or pork chops!

Why gardening is amazing!

Some people wonder why I garden and here’s the answer…

I just love seeing all the colors in the flowers and love having fresh vegetables right out of the garden.

Audrey Hepburn said “To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.”

That is so true. You plant the seeds or the plants and hold your breath to see if it will take. But when it does, it’s amazing.

If you’ve always wanted to try your hand at gardening, but need a little help to get started, you can find some good references at https://scottsmiraclegro.com/.

P.S. – Gardening also helps when you’re writing a book! In More than a Mission, the heroine is a chef with an extensive garden, but some of those plants may have been used to poison a prince!

What’s in your bag?

Whenever I travel, there are some things that I always take with me: my laptop, my phone, and a good book. Those are my must-haves for any trip. How about you? What’s in your bag that you always take?
