Discover the Undead Energies with HUNGER by Karen E. Taylor

I want to share with you today Karen E. Taylor who is a horror/paranormal author, with eight published novels to date and an eclectic assortment of short fiction which ranges from vampires to ghosts to telepathic, romantic dinosaurs. She claims she starts out to write a “normal” story, but then her characters turn spectral or grow fangs or fur or wings. So she writes what she loves and hopes her readers love it too. She started writing her first novel (Beauty Like the Night) in 1988. It was that novel, published in 1993 under the title of Blood Secrets, that started Karen’s career.

Thanks so much for visiting with us today and sharing the undead energy in your June 2011 release, HUNGER: THE VAMPIRE LEGACY from Kensington Publishing. Here’s a little teaser for you:

Deirdre Griffin didn’t choose to be a vampire. But she is. And she’s determined to make the most of her fate. For Deirdre that means surrendering to the raging hunger ignited by even the slightest whiff of blood a hunger that pulses through her body like a fever, demanding release. It means making friends in dark places and savouring every hot, salty, bitter, revitalizing drop of life force the night has to offer..

When did you publish your first book?

Blood Secrets was first published in December 1993. It’s been reprinted several times – most recently as the first half of the omnibus HUNGER.

What genre is your current release and what made you decide to write in this genre?

The publisher currently has HUNGER listed in the fiction/literature category. When the Vampire Legacy novels were first published they were included in Zebra’s horror line. They probably fit best in the fantasy/urban fantasy/paranormal area. I didn’t actually decide to write in any particular genre; in fact when I started writing that first novel , there was no paranormal romance classification. It was the publisher who sorted them into a genre. To be honest, I’m still not sure where they best fit – there is horror there, as well as romance and mystery.

Tell us a little something about your book.

HUNGER is an omnibus edition of the first two novels in the series – Blood Secrets and Bitter Blood. They tell the story of Deirdre Griffin, coming to terms with her vampiric existence and learning to balance her life of human emotion and monstrous appetite.

The heroine sounds interesting. What else can you tell us about Deirdre?

Deirdre is an unwilling vampire, who holds tightly to her human past, keeps her true nature as secret as possible, and tries to keep her human acquaintances at arm’s distance when possible. She’s not looking for love or a relationship of any sort, she’s just trying to stay alive.

I bet it would take a very special hero to handle her? What is he like?

Mitch Greer is a plain-clothes detective. He is strong, guarded and stubborn, burned by relationships in the past. And although he is drawn to Deirdre, he has a hard time believing in who and what she is, until confronted with the truth.

Where is your story set and does that influence the plot lines and characters in your stories?

The first novel is set in NYC. The second starts in London, moves to NYC, and ends in London again. I think that the places serve mostly as atmosphere, but don’t really dictate plotlines or character actions, except where navigating traffic, etc. is involved. And sometimes the places create hazards of their own – extended air travel is usually more complicated than it should be, as is living in places too far north where the summers don’t contain enough night-time.

Do you have any rituals that you do before starting to write?

I often turn off the lights in my office (which is actually half of my walk-in closet) and light candles. I also cue up music picked especially for the book/story I’m currently working on and make sure I have something warm to drink (coffee for morning/afternoon and tea for evenings.) Then, of course, I play a few rounds of solitaire to settle into the chair.

What are you working on now and what will readers have to look forward to in the future?

Currently I’m working on Eviction Notice, a novel about Lexi Trask, a half-breed elemental (demon) living in wildfire-stricken Santa Barbara. She’s outstayed her time on earth and must find a way to outsmart the devil, before being deported back to hell. It might be a series, depending on publisher interest. Before then, though, CRAVE will be released in October 2011, another omnibus edition that will contain the third and fourth Vampire Legacy novels. 2012 might also bring two more editions, finishing out the series.

Wicked Wednesday – Sexy Alpha Heroes

There is something about alpha heroes that is so sexy, but of course, no one really wants a true alpha hero. I mean who could live with someone who always had to be on top, didn’t want emotional connections to anyone and equated physical strength with emotional strength. Just some of the not-so-nice traits of alpha heroes.

What we do love is strong men who are seemingly sure of themselves, but have that chink in their armor that allows for real relationships to develop. Physically strong men who are capable of being gentle as well as capable of showing emotional weakness. They can know to be strong by sharing the burdens of life with a significant other.

THE FIFTH KINGDOM Romantic suspenseWhen I started writing THE FIFTH KINGDOM, I knew CIA Agent Bill Santana was going to be that kind of sexy hero. One who was strong, but had a soft spot inside. A wounded spot, actually. I didn’t know that at first when I started writing, but as Bill met up with the prickly and equally alpha Dr. Deanna Vasquez, a lot of his pent up old emotions rose up to make him so much more of a real person.

That pain that he was carrying inside of him touched Deanna, who likewise had a similar wound in her psyche. I think that’s what made them so special together – that their love for each other healed the scars they both bore in their hearts.

Of course we need some action as well since it is a romantic suspense. In THE FIFTH KINGDOM, the action revolves around Bill’s search for an archeologist kidnapped by a Mexican terrorist group. The archeologist is Deanna’s mom, Dr. Miranda Adams, who abandoned Deanna nearly fifteen years earlier which is the source of her pain.

Miranda has discovered what may be Montezuma’s tomb and an ancient artifact within the resting place, but it is only as the story evolves that Deanna comes to realize that the relic has some very unusual powers.

I loosely based the relic on the Mexican sun stone (shown below). The sun stone is a calendar of sorts, but also a history of the Mexica people (whom we call the Aztecs). The original of the stone is in Mexico City and in the story, Deanna and Bill take a visit to the museum to see the stone and to also try and infiltrate the terrorist group.

In case you haven’t had a chance to check out an excerpt from THE FIFTH KINGDOM, here it is!

Yet More Wicked Thoughts

On Monday we were talking about what turns you on in a man. Hands. Face. Eyes. Working man’s physique. Thanks to all of you who commented and provided help as I busily revise my current work-in-progress.

Which brings us to today’s more wicked thoughts segment. With stories getting sexier by the millisecond, what are the things you like and dislike seeing in your stories?

For me, a story isn’t really sexy unless there is some emotional connection between the hero or heroine. Even if it’s lust at first sight, there has to be the promise of more between them for me to really get involved in the story.

How about you? Do you need that emotional connection? Must there be a happily-ever-after or the promise of one for you to be satisfied at the end of the story?

How I Sold 100000 E-books In 60 Days by Vincent Zandri & a Contest

With all the discussion about self-publishing books and how published authors can reap their backlists in order to sell more books, I thought it appropriate to bring in someone who has become a bestselling author using today’s technologies. So without further ado, here is Vincent Zandri.

How I sold 100,000 E-Books in 60 Days: A Letter to my Mom
By Vincent Zandri

Dear Mom,

For the one-thousandth time, NO, I’M NOT GOING TO GET A ‘REAL JOB!’ I don’t need to. I just sold over 100,000 E-Books in 60 days. Yah, that’s right mom. That’s not a typo. No I’m not drunk again, and no I’m not smoking crack or puffing on whacky weed. I don’t do drugs.

But I sold 100,000 books and I did it with the help of my new publisher StoneHouse/StoneGate Ink. Ok, I know, I’ve had publishers before. Big publishers who gave me a quarter-million bucks in advance for a couple of books that barely made it off the runway before crashing and burning. I know the embarrassment it caused you at the beauty parlor while all those chatty women kept asking you, “Whatever happened to your son? Does he still write?” Well, now you can tell them I hit the 100,000 book club, and when they look at you with disbelieving eyes from under the bulbous transparent hair-dryers and ask you how on earth I did it, you can tell them this:

1. I’m obsessed with my numbers. Kindle numbers. So what’s the first thing I do in the morning even before getting out of bed, I check my numbers via my Blackberry. The information grounds me and gives me a sense of which book or books I might want push that day.

2. Then, after making the coffee and washing up, I hit the Facebook. While in the old days I might have posted something stupid like, “Buy my new book THE INNOCENT!” I rarely go for that direct marketing approach anymore. Better to take the indirect approach. My FB friends get kind of sick of me asking them to always buy, buy, buy. Better to simply post your thoughts and feelings for that moment in time. Even if they’re just silly. People can relate to “I could go for a beer right now!” better than they do, “Buy This Book!” It’s the difference between becoming a real person someone likes and enjoys as a friend, as opposed to a used car salesman whom they most definitely do not. And if people like and appreciate you for who you are, they will probably give your books a try. I.E. Ernest Hemingway and Norman Mailer didn’t survive as bestsellers on talent alone: they spent a great deal of time building their cult of personality.

3. While still on Facebook, I might check out some of the pages I belong to like Amazon Kindle and NOOK. While once a week, I’m allowed to push one of my books like THE REMAINS or GODCHILD directly on the pages, I use these forums more to contribute to whatever conversation is at present going on. Or if there isn’t a particular thread being explored, I might start one, such as “Are Mommy Bloggers More Powerful than the New York Times Review of Books?” E-Book readers are a chatty bunch and they don’t consider their electronic reading devices simply a means for reading the latest and greatest. That e-reader gripped in their hands means they belong to an exclusive club. That club allows its many voices to be heard on the FB pages. It’s fun for readers and fans to hear from the authors they are reading now and again.

4. Same goes for KindleBoards. After hitting up the FB pages, I might log onto that site and either contribute to an ongoing topic at the Writer’s Cafe, or post my own topic. Being on KindleBoards lets other authors like myself know that I care enough about their triumphs and pitfalls to comment on them. We offer encouragement when things are bad, and kudos when things are going well. It’s sort of like a student union for writers.

5. From there I navigate my way to my other online communities…My Twitter, my Edgy Christian Fiction, my Goodreads, my Crimespace, my LinkedIn, and more. if I don’t have something to post there in their respective blog sections, I’ll maybe provide a real-time status update, such as, ‘I’ll be appearing on Suspense Magazine’s Blog Talk Radio…’ I’ll offer up a link to the program along with the time and date of my scheduled appearance.

6. Once all that’s done, I might take an hour to write a new blog for The Vincent Zandri Vox. The blog topic will usually be one that has to do with writing or publishing. On occasion, I’ll write about my experiences in marketing my work. Other writers, especially newbies are starving for information and stories from those who have been there before them. Especially from authors who have been published by both the Big 6 and the Indies like myself. They like to get the inside scoop on what it’s like to be more or less screwed over by a company like Random House only to emerge from the dark wilderness and into the welcome arms of a family run publisher like StoneHouse/StoneGate Ink. Many of these new authors are also interested in the self-publishing process. But that’s more for a very popular blog like JAKonrath’s, “A Newbies Guide to Publishing” blog. I highly recommend it for the DIY author.

7. When the blog is completed, it’s time to make it viral (no mom, I’m not trying to make people sick!). That means I’ll post it to all the social networks like FB, Twitter, Delicious, Google Buzz, Myspace, Digg,… you name it. If the blog is discussion worthy, I’ll re-post it to KindleBoards and a few other discussion-related groups and forums I belong to on FB, Yahoo, Crimespace, and even Goodreads. Lastly, I’ll post the new blog on my fan page and my FB page for The Vincent Zandri Vox.

8. If I have a virtual tour going on, such as the one I will have going for GODCHILD in May, I’ll want to check in on the tour-stop of the day, which can be a review, a guest blog post, an interview, or even a live chat which usually will happen in the evening after dinner. On occasion I might have a blog talk radio scheduled for that day, which can run about an hour.

9. At some point in the day, I’ll want to email some fellow authors and ask them for guest posts for the Vincent Zandri Vox, because your author blog shouldn’t be narrow or static. It shouldn’t be all about you! It should be a communal place where not only my books and opinions are discussed, but a whole range of books and topics.

10. At some point in the day, I’ll check in with my publisher. We’ll strategize and make plans over which books we have coming out when, such as the new special edition combo I have going with the great noir legend, Dave Zeltserman (Dying Memories/Godchild) and my brand new forthcoming novel, Concrete Pearl. Or we’ll talk pricing. The great thing about being with an indie publisher is that they have a lot of freedom to experiment with pricing. My publisher Aaron Patterson is also a bestselling novelist himself (Sweet Dreams, Ariel, …) and he understands the importance of offering up a great book for the lowest price possible. Wow, what concept, huh mom? Our pricing strategy for now is based on the concept of the “rotation.” An author should always have one or two books available at $.99 and maybe another couple at $2.99, perhaps one at $4.99 and, as is the case with my catalog, even one at $8.95. Having some books on sale ensures that your audience is always expanding and even though you might invite a bad review or two by underpricing your books temporarily, the benefits inherent with creating new fans far outweigh the negatives. In any case, all this pricing stuff is a work in progress.

11. Ok, so when all that’s done, it’s time to think about the real thing behind the success. The writing. What’s the most surefire way to sell 100,000 e-books in 60 days? Good, if not great writing. And great writing takes time. It can’t be rushed, even if this is the new era of authors meeting the challenge of publishing two, three, and in some cases, four books per year–a feat unheard of back when I was publishing with the biggies. E-books are forever, and never will they go out of print. So, for as long as a book still resides in your gray matter and not on the printed cyber-page (and yes, mom, trade paperback!), it’s not earning money. However, putting lots of books out for public consumption doesn’t mean skimping on quality. What’s the fastest way to guarantee never to sell 100,000 e-books in 60 days again? Bad writing.

Well, I hope this gives you some idea of what it takes to sell all those books, mom. And I guess you can see now how impossible it would be for me to have a real job. I work seven days a week right now as it is. Talk about a time consuming career. Don’t believe me? Just ask your two ex-daughter in-laws. I’m sure they’d both have something to say on the topic.

But let me ask you something else, mom.

What real job out there would pay me close to $20,000 in a single month to do something I absolutely love? Would I get 20 Gs per month project managing construction projects? Would I get 20Gs per month if I were an accountant? Would I get 20 G’s per moth if I were teaching high school? If I were writing public relations and advertising copy?

Probably not, which is why I choose to be a full-time writer in this, the new golden age of publishing.

I have to go now, mom. Lots of work to do. Tell dad, I said hi! And I hope you guys can come and visit me in Italy soon. Oh, yeah, did I forget to tell you that I can write and conduct my writing business from anywhere in the world???? Now try and do that with a real job and two weeks vacation per year!

All my love,
Vince

Ghosts Amongst Us by Susan Kronick

I’m very excited to have with us today psychologist and medium Dr. Susan Kronick who has investigated countless ghostly encounters over the years. In her capacity as a paranormal investigator, blessed with the ability to see ghosts, Susan presents some surprising facts and words of wisdom about the spirit world you may not know.

Without further ado, here’s Susan as she discusses the ghosts amongst us!

You probably passed a ghost on the street, and didn’t even know it!

Most people don’t realize that ghosts are always walking among us! Contrary to the belief that they always appear transparent with an ethereal “Casper-like” white glow about them, a spirit can present itself however it chooses. A specter may appear solid and even be warm to the touch. The only way you may discover you had an encounter with a ghost, is if the spirit were to suddenly disappear before your eyes. If the ghost walks off into the sunset, you may remain clueless to your encounter with a supernatural being.

Sometimes what you’re seeing is NOT a real live dead guy!

This is known as a residual haunting, which does depict someone who did live at some point in the past. The image of the ghost does represent events from time gone by play repeatedly This type of haunting can represent either a replay of a person’s ordinary habits, such as seeing grandma at her usual spot in the kitchen baking cookies, or can depict a traumatic emotionally charged event. It would in fact appear similar to old movie reruns. The apparitions present in this type of haunting are telepathic or psychical induced hallucinations, not living spirits

All ghosts are NOT friendly like Casper!

The spirit realm has its share of unfriendly characters. Some are simply nasty earth bound spirits, who never crossed into the light. They feel cheated and resent their fate, what they consider was a premature death. Other negative entities are much more dangerous. That would include threats by demonic entities that never walked the earth in human form. They are the most maniacal, as they don’t want God’s blessing.

Not all ghosts have tales of woe!

Contrary to the popular belief that all ghosts are unhappy souls roaming the earth, many spirits choose to go into the light but return periodically to look after their loved ones, often referred to as a “protector ghost,” because of their good intentions. These spectral -guardians have been identified in at least 75% of the investigations I have done.

In closing, I quote from Dr. Karlis Osis, who had this to say about apparitions/ghosts: “To me, it is silly the way in which people are totally unprepared to handle apparition experiences. They run-even from their own mothers. This is cruel. We should prepare people for all life situations-not just driving a car or crossing the street, but having an apparition experience as well.”

Paranormal Romance THE LOST

I’ve got a little teaser for you from the first book in my new paranormal romance series – The Sin Hunters from Forever Romance.

THE LOST will be out on July 26, 2011 and I can’t wait for the series to start. It’s a radically new concept: Energy gatherers who can become anything they want, suck energy from anything in nature – including humans – and use that energy was weapons in a variety of ways. Energy orbs, discharges to erase memories, you name it.

But amidst all that energy there is an even stronger force: Love. Adam Bruno and Bobbie Carrera are two unique and tortured individuals. Adam is emotionally wounded while Bobbie bears both the mental and physical scars of war. When they come together . . .

I hope you enjoy this little excerpt from THE LOST!

All About Obsession

So sorry to have missed you yesterday, but New Jersey Transit had other plans for me it seems. In addition to a one hour delay in the morning, my 40 minute train ride home turned into a two and a half hour journey. Luckily I met up with my friend and fellow author Nisha Sharma on the train and we turned that lemon into lemonade.

With today being Wicked Wednesday, why not talk about Obsession?

Obsession.
It’s a word bandied about in television commercials trying to sell you an assortment of items. People admit to being obsessed about everything from foods to movies to books, not really meaning or understanding the true meaning of obsession.
In its most extreme forms obsession becomes the master, overtaking heart, mind and soul with no thought to reason. It can enslave when there is no way to end the compulsion for someone or some thing or it can liberate when the obsession is satisfied and brings enlightenment.

Where is that coming from you may wonder? Well, I am so honored to have been asked to write the foreword for a new book of erotica for women edited by the wonderful Rachel Kramer Bussell.

OBSESSED is a sexy and eclectic collection of erotic romance stories for those who like a sexier read. It was quite interesting to see the diversity of the stories as the writers like Kayla Perrin and others explore an assortment of obsessions from a compelling attraction to a boss to rekindling married love in a story by Rachel.

Having enjoyed the stories so much, I think I’m going to try my hand at a sexy little story with a vampire and his female keeper. What do you think? Do you like sexier stories like this? Inquiring minds want to know.

Also, the Danger Women Writing blog-a-thon and contest continues today with Esi Sogah from Avon. Lave a comment at the Danger Women Writing Blog for a chance to win a $10 gift card. EVERY comment goes towards the drawing for the Sony e-reader on May 8th.
