Friends to Lovers, Brother’s Best Friend

There are some tropes that I absolutely love: Second Chance at Love, Friends to lovers, and Brother’s Best Friend. Since I love to read those, I also love to write those and in Just One Night, a story about a young military hero on his last night before a deployment, I managed to work in the Friends to Lovers and Brother’s Best Friend. Did I mention that the heroine is older as well? Not cougar old, but definitely falling for a younger man, another of my fav things! So today I’m sharing a free read from Just One Night which is a sexy, humorous, emotional, and uplifting story about taking a chance on finding love. Even better, it’s specially priced at 99 cents for a limited time!

Chapter 1

Nicole de Salvo stared out the train window as every passing mile brought her closer to home . . . and to him.

It had been a hectic day with a dash down to the Philadelphia area for her brother’s and Jase’s graduation and then a rushed trip back to New York City for an interview for a position she wanted for her summer break from medical school. An interview that couldn’t be rescheduled no matter what.

The nearly two hour train ride down to her family’s home on the Jersey Shore was long, but at least it would give her a moment to catch her breath and prepare for seeing him again.

For seeing Jase, possibly for the last time.

He had looked amazing that morning in his dress uniform, sword at his side and his second lieutenant’s bars gleaming in the morning sun. The deep blue of the uniform had made his green eyes seem aqua, like the ocean bathed with brilliant light. Tall and imposing, he had looked every inch an officer and a warrior until he had fixed his gaze on her and offered up the wicked little boy grin that did all kinds of things to her insides.

She pressed a hand to her stomach to quiet the nervous flutters as she thought about seeing him again once she arrived at home, where her younger brother Tommy’s graduation party would be in full swing. It had been tough enough seeing Jase that morning, knowing that with every minute that passed their time together was fading away.

This night at the party and knowing it would be the last one they’d share was going to be one of the hardest things she ever did.

Driving that thought from her mind, she glanced out the train windows and caught glimpses of the shoreline and ocean visible from the North Jersey Coast line.

They’d all spent so much time in those waters, her, Tommy, and his best friend Jason. Jase to his friends.

She was a friend, kind of. After all, they’d grown up together and had spent many a lazy summer along the shore. But as they’d gotten older, something had changed.

The typical teasing between kids, between her and Jase, had become more flirty. Definitely full of subtle sexiness. Or at least, it had gotten that way on his part.

She hadn’t known how to handle it when an eighteen year old Jase had settled that green-eyed gaze on her, flashed her a not-so-innocent dimpled grin, and heat had ignited inside her. Four years later, she still didn’t know how to handle him.

He was like a little brother to her, although the annoying voice in her head shouted a big, “Hell to the no” and reminded her that they were only two years apart in age.

Reluctantly she admitted to herself that Jase was definitely not like a little brother. Not since she’d come to understand that the weird little tingle she got whenever she saw him or talked to him meant that there was way more to her feelings for him.

More that she had yet to explore, only time was running out for them.

As the train chugged along on her way home, she dragged up the memory of what he’d looked like as he’d sauntered up to her this morning after graduation, looking every inch the hero. His swimmer’s shoulders looking even broader in his uniform. His green eyes bright and warming as they settled on her. His smile had been inviting as he’d leaned in and kissed her. Chastely, but she’d wanted to linger and have it be more. She had wanted to savor those amazing lips before she had reined herself in. She reminded herself that she never would give in to that desire because she was too sensible and responsible and downright boring.

She closed her eyes to hold in the memories. Allowed herself to imagine what it might be like to be with Jase. To let go and explore the temptation.

In her mind’s eye, she pulled his white dress hat off his head and tossed it to the side. Skimmed her fingers through the buzz cut sandy-colored hair at the sides of his head and the longer strands up top before cradling his head and drawing him near for a not so simple kiss.

She covered his mouth with hers and pulled at his bottom lip with her teeth, urging him to open for her. When he did, she dipped her tongue in and tasted him. Trailed her tongue all around and nipped at the fullness of his lips with her teeth.

His strong hands were at her waist, holding her close. Possessively hard and yet gentle as he dragged her closer, but she shifted away because she wanted more than just his kiss.

She trailed her hands down to his shoulders and then lower to his lean waist and the shiny brass buckle with the Marine insignia. As she undid the buckle and loosened his white belt, he snared his sword as the belt started to drop, and gently laid them both on the ground.

“Are you sure about this?” her dream Jase asked as he rose to stand before her again.

“Oh, yeah, I’m sure,” her imaginary self answered because her real self lacked the courage to take a chance with Jase.

He helped her open the brass buttons down the front of his dress blues, and in her fantasy, his chest was bare beneath the wool fabric.

His skin was a luscious honey gold thanks to his end-of-summer tan. He got that smooth golden color from being a lifeguard on the beach to earn money for college and other necessities.

How many times had she snuck a peek at him up in the stand as she’d sat under her umbrella, reading her latest romance novel?

Not that you needed a sexy fictional alpha hero when you had your own just feet away if only you’d do something about it, the little voice in her head had screamed more than once during those long lazy summers.

She forced away the annoying voice and resumed her fantasy, running her hands down across the chiseled muscles of that tanned chest. His skin was sun-kissed warm and slightly damp. She needed a taste and leaned forward, licked from the center of his chest to the hard masculine nipple that she sucked, earning a soft moan from him. He tasted salty like the ocean.

She smiled and moved her hands down toward his waistband, and he helped her by undoing his pants and letting them drop.

He had gone commando (this was her fantasy after all) and his cock was rock hard. Long, thick, and smooth beneath her hand as she encircled him.

He groaned and his eyes fluttered close as he said, “I like that, Nickie.”

Behind the Scenes Aztec Gold and The Fifth Kingdom

I was very lucky to be able to visit Mexico numerous times while I was working. Even though I had business things to deal with, I always made a point to spend any free time learning about Mexican culture. I was also lucky to have a fabulous client who shared so much of their history, foods, and culture with me.

I used what I learned to craft two of my stories — Aztec Gold and The Fifth Kingdom.

In Aztec Gold I worked in various aspects of Mexica culture, things like the games they played, food they ate, and the Aztec gods. The villain in the story is a demon demigoddess Eztli Etalpalli, Blood Wing. In the story, the demigoddess is descended from Izpapalotl, the Clawed Butterfly.

The research for The Fifth Kingdom took me to Chapultepec Park and the nearby National Museum of Anthropology. I was like a kid in a candy shop as I strolled around, looking at so many fascinating items but the highlight was when I got to stand right in front of the sun stone!

The sun stone, or should I say a copy of it made of black obsidian, plays a major part in the romantic suspense plot in The Fifth Kingdom. The sun stone is probably the most famous piece of Mexica culture. Scholars believe that the four segments of the stone’s artfully carved surface represent the four eras of their history. Each era was ended by some calamity, but the Earth and humans came again for the next era. The Aztecs believed that when the last kingdom arrived – The Fifth Kingdom – all life on Earth would cease and not be resurrected. It’s possible the Aztecs believed that the arrival of the Conquistadors signaled the beginning of the Fifth Kingdom.

I took lots of photos as I strolled around Chapultepec Park, much like the heroine’s mom in The Fifth Kingdom. I also took photos in the museum, including one of the sun stone, and I’m sharing those with you today!

Face or No Face? You decide

They say you can’t choose a book by its cover and yet that’s the number one thing that readers look at when deciding whether to read a book. So, a cover is really important and when authors or publishers work on a cover, they have a ton of decisions to make. One decision is whether or not to show a hero’s face. Some readers don’t want to see the face because they want to create their own impression of the hero. Other readers just love seeing the hunky hero’s features on the cover. When I did the cover for The Prince’s Gamble, I opted to just tease you with the face because I wanted the prince to be a little mysterious especially since the heroine thinks he’s the main suspect in a human trafficking ring. For Brickell Avenue Ambush, the publisher thought it was important to show the hero’s face and he’s definitely like I pictured him! Ricky is very much a suit kind of guy since he’s a psychologist helping his family protect a woman whose ex has a deadly secret! I love both covers, but I wonder how you feel about the face/no face question. Do you like to fill in the features or do you like seeing the hero’s face on the cover?
this or that

CADDYGIRLS is their new release from Carina Press.

Here’s a little teaser for you!

Torrey Green once had a promising golf career, but now she’s stuck caddying for butt-pinching businessmen. She doesn’t mind playing dumb while hauling clubs if it means she can get her golf career back on track, and she’s going to need an influx of cash to focus on the pro circuit. A booking from video game mogul Julian Grant could be Torrey’s cash-flow solution.

In Las Vegas for a business deal, Julian’s partners plan for a little action on the greens. They’re looking for some fun with their rent-a-caddy girls, and have a lot riding on who can score, on the course and off. This type of gamble isn’t Julian’s style, but he’ll do whatever it takes to keep his partners happy – even if that includes breaking a few hearts along the way.

Julian soon discovers that Torrey is more than just a caddy girl and they spark an intriguing attraction – but if Torrey discovers the truth behind his idiotic wager, all bets are off…

Excerpt from CADDY GIRLS by V.K. Sykes

On their first date together, Julian takes Torrey to a black light, mini-putt golf course…

Julian had never been to Pirate’s Cove, but he’d walked and driven past it dozens of times. Cheesy was the first word that had sprung to mind whenever he’d noticed the popular Strip attraction. The entrance to the course was a pirate ship’s prow that looked like it had been molded from a dingy chunk of Styrofoam. Precariously balanced on the edge of the prow stood a twenty-foot statue of Pirate Pete, saber pointing defiantly skyward. Too bad the tip of Pete’s nose had broken off, spoiling the ferocious effect.

Pirate’s Cove actually had two mini-golf courses—one regular and one black light.

“Which one should we try?” he asked, leaving the decision up to her.

She didn’t hesitate. “The black light sounds like more fun.”

Julian paid, grabbed the putters and balls and led her through into the black light course. A flood of lurid colors washed over them—bizarre shades of blue, purple, pink, red and green. Even the putters and balls glowed in the dark. Garish, pirate-themed props—some hanging in mid-air—popped out of the darkness.

He turned to Torrey, intending to rip on the tackiness of it all, but the sarcastic remark died on his lips. Her black dress had essentially vanished under the black light, leaving her white underwear clearly visible, almost as if she were in an x-ray machine. She took the putter from his hand, obviously unaware of the rather spectacular display of her lush body.

His throat felt suddenly dry and prickly. One minute she’d been in a severe black dress—the next, her feminine undergarments and what they covered were in full, glorious view. Actually, her lacy bra and panties seemed quite demure, not like the scraps of fabric some of his dates had sported. Still, the glowing white shapes of her full breasts and deliciously curvy ass were the sexiest things he’d seen in a long time. He was getting an embarrassing hard-on in the middle of a family amusement center.

“Torrey?” He handed her a radioactive-looking ball as he dragged his eyes level with her face.

“This is going to be fun, Julian. You want me to go first?”

“I was thinking that maybe this isn’t such a great idea after all. I’m afraid everybody can see your underwear in this crazy light.”

She cast her gaze down and let out a tiny gasp. “Oh, my God, you’re right.” She looked up at him, her eyes even bigger than usual. “But why can’t I see yours?” She glanced across the room and pointed at a woman a couple of holes ahead. “I can see that woman’s panties, too!”

“It looks like the light picks up white things under dark outerwear,” Julian said, mentally kicking himself for his lame idea. The last thing he wanted was to embarrass her. “Why don’t we try the regular course instead? Or we could just leave, if you want.”

She grinned, her teeth glowing an unnatural shade of white. “No, let’s stay here. I can handle it, Julian,” she said with a little laugh. “I’ve worn bikinis that reveal a lot more.”

He smiled back. I’d like to see those.

“Okay,” he replied. “Just don’t be surprised if I can’t keep my eyes on the game.”

“Oh, you’re too much of a gentleman for such sexist behavior.”

“Tell that to my hormones.”

She tilted her head and feigned exasperation. “Are we going to play some golf or stand around here jawing all night?”

He laughed, so turned on by her easy self-confidence that he wanted nothing more than to haul her back to his hotel room and make love to her for the rest of the night.

Later, he promised himself.
