Wicked Wednesday – Meet Bobbie and Adam

THE LOST paranormal romanceThere are some characters that you fall in love with as a writer and I think Bobbie and Adam were that for me in THE LOST. I loved the way they grew as the story developed and how they overcame both their physical and emotional wounds to find love.

If you’ve either bought the book or checked it out online, you may know that I’ve dedicated it to the men, women and families of our military. I did that because I truly believe it is up to us to honor their sacrifice and help them how we can. In the past I’ve posted how to contribute to various organizations or donate books and other things.

In this book, both the dedication and Bobbie’s courage on her return home were a way to also honor our military people.

I want to share Bobbie and Adam with you today. In this excerpt, Bobbie and Adam have just survived a battle with two men who were trying to abduct Adam. During the fight Bobbie, who is rehabilitating from wounds while suffered as a Marine in Iraq, is slightly injured. When Adam touches her, however, she feels her injuries improve. Bobbie goes to Adam’s home to speak to him about what has happened.

Warning: I am a bit of a tease and will leave you at a pivotal point. Won’t say more and spoil it for you!

Discover THE LOST Heroes

With the release of THE LOST just a day away, I thought I’d share some of the secrets behind the creation of the novel. Before I tell you why I love Adam and Bobbie from THE LOST, here is the blurb from the back jacket cover:

Adam Bruno is no ordinary millionaire. The heir to an ancient race possessing a dark, powerful magic, he can shapeshift and create energy. His gifts make him a living weapon and have forced him to live in seclusion. But now an inhuman force hunts down Adam-just when he finds someone who makes him feel more human than he ever imagined possible . . .

Home from combat in Iraq, Bobbie Carrera wants only peace, yet soon joins Adam in a terrifying battle against paranormal enemies who hide in plain sight. She’s drawn to his strength of mind and body; he’s attracted to her courage and intoxicating energy. Their scorching passion can either transport them to the heights of ecstasy or-if Adam’s powers rage out of control-destroy them. But when an invisible brotherhood tightens its nets and someone Adam trusts betrays him, only a heartrending decision can save them.

Now, I have to tell you, that’s only the tip of the iceberg for these two characters.

I loved Adam because he is an uncertain hero and a bit tortured. He has no idea why he has such unusual powers and until he meets Bobbie, his powers have only caused harm to others. Not so at his first touch of Bobbie. The fact that he is finally bonding with someone is difficult for him, especially since he not only doesn’t have a clue as to why he has such powers, Adam doesn’t really know who he is. I loved exploring how he slowly comes to terms with not only his abilities, but with the fact that he no longer has to be alone.

As for Bobbie, well, she is like one of my favorite heroines of all time and that’s saying a lot that she’s competing with Diana Reyes from THE CALLING. A Marine home from war, she is both emotionally and physically wounded, but that doesn’t stop Bobbie from coming to Adam’s rescue in various ways. She rescues him when he is attacked and she rescues him from loneliness because she is a woman who is sure of herself and what she wants in life.

Many of you have asked what inspired THE LOST . Well, lots of things that we’ll be talking about again over the next couple of weeks. For now I’ll share with you the eye candy that inspired both Adam and Bobbie physically.

Adam is blonde, big and beautiful and the man who caught my eye to fit that bill was Curtis Stone.

CURTIS STONE

As for Bobbie, I wanted someone who was athletic, dark-haired and dark-eyed. Beautiful. Kate Beckinsale was the perfect choice for a model.

Kate Beckinsale

Together Bobbie and Adam are wonderful. Sexy, dark and empowered by being together. I love the chemistry they have and the way that the power of their love and Hunter power merge to make them both stronger.

I hope you’ll feel the same way about them after reading THE LOST.

Hot in Here!

Is the weather hot or was it Diane’s sizzling excerpt? Whew, I don’t know, but just in case it’s the weather, I’m offering up my version of a Public Service Announcement for you as we head into the weekend.

Stay indoors and out of the heat. I know you want to be weekend warrior, jog, garden or any of those other things, but with the heat as bad as it is, you risk heat stroke.

Drink lots and lots of water. Staying hydrated helps your body maintain its right temperature.

If you have AC, turn it on, but be mindful of the drag on the power grid. So keep it at 72 instead of 68. With this heat, you’ll never get it to 68. Most AC units can only reduce ambient temperature by about 20 degrees (or at least I’ve been told).

If you don’t have AC, create your own version of swamp cooling. Put a low, wide bowl filled with water and ice cubes in front of a fan. Let the fan blow the air over the bowl and toward you. It’ll work. Trust me.

Go to the mall, movies or even better yet, the book store! They’ll have AC for sure. You won’t be able to pick up THE LOST though because that does not hit shelves until Tuesday.

Which brings me to . . .

OMG! I can’t believe it’s almost here!! Yes, I am excited about this one. It’s so different, dark and sexy. I hope you’ll love Adam and Bobbie as much as I do.

Discover the Undead Energies with HUNGER by Karen E. Taylor

I want to share with you today Karen E. Taylor who is a horror/paranormal author, with eight published novels to date and an eclectic assortment of short fiction which ranges from vampires to ghosts to telepathic, romantic dinosaurs. She claims she starts out to write a “normal” story, but then her characters turn spectral or grow fangs or fur or wings. So she writes what she loves and hopes her readers love it too. She started writing her first novel (Beauty Like the Night) in 1988. It was that novel, published in 1993 under the title of Blood Secrets, that started Karen’s career.

Thanks so much for visiting with us today and sharing the undead energy in your June 2011 release, HUNGER: THE VAMPIRE LEGACY from Kensington Publishing. Here’s a little teaser for you:

Deirdre Griffin didn’t choose to be a vampire. But she is. And she’s determined to make the most of her fate. For Deirdre that means surrendering to the raging hunger ignited by even the slightest whiff of blood a hunger that pulses through her body like a fever, demanding release. It means making friends in dark places and savouring every hot, salty, bitter, revitalizing drop of life force the night has to offer..

When did you publish your first book?

Blood Secrets was first published in December 1993. It’s been reprinted several times – most recently as the first half of the omnibus HUNGER.

What genre is your current release and what made you decide to write in this genre?

The publisher currently has HUNGER listed in the fiction/literature category. When the Vampire Legacy novels were first published they were included in Zebra’s horror line. They probably fit best in the fantasy/urban fantasy/paranormal area. I didn’t actually decide to write in any particular genre; in fact when I started writing that first novel , there was no paranormal romance classification. It was the publisher who sorted them into a genre. To be honest, I’m still not sure where they best fit – there is horror there, as well as romance and mystery.

Tell us a little something about your book.

HUNGER is an omnibus edition of the first two novels in the series – Blood Secrets and Bitter Blood. They tell the story of Deirdre Griffin, coming to terms with her vampiric existence and learning to balance her life of human emotion and monstrous appetite.

The heroine sounds interesting. What else can you tell us about Deirdre?

Deirdre is an unwilling vampire, who holds tightly to her human past, keeps her true nature as secret as possible, and tries to keep her human acquaintances at arm’s distance when possible. She’s not looking for love or a relationship of any sort, she’s just trying to stay alive.

I bet it would take a very special hero to handle her? What is he like?

Mitch Greer is a plain-clothes detective. He is strong, guarded and stubborn, burned by relationships in the past. And although he is drawn to Deirdre, he has a hard time believing in who and what she is, until confronted with the truth.

Where is your story set and does that influence the plot lines and characters in your stories?

The first novel is set in NYC. The second starts in London, moves to NYC, and ends in London again. I think that the places serve mostly as atmosphere, but don’t really dictate plotlines or character actions, except where navigating traffic, etc. is involved. And sometimes the places create hazards of their own – extended air travel is usually more complicated than it should be, as is living in places too far north where the summers don’t contain enough night-time.

Do you have any rituals that you do before starting to write?

I often turn off the lights in my office (which is actually half of my walk-in closet) and light candles. I also cue up music picked especially for the book/story I’m currently working on and make sure I have something warm to drink (coffee for morning/afternoon and tea for evenings.) Then, of course, I play a few rounds of solitaire to settle into the chair.

What are you working on now and what will readers have to look forward to in the future?

Currently I’m working on Eviction Notice, a novel about Lexi Trask, a half-breed elemental (demon) living in wildfire-stricken Santa Barbara. She’s outstayed her time on earth and must find a way to outsmart the devil, before being deported back to hell. It might be a series, depending on publisher interest. Before then, though, CRAVE will be released in October 2011, another omnibus edition that will contain the third and fourth Vampire Legacy novels. 2012 might also bring two more editions, finishing out the series.

Discover THE LOST Energies: Oozing Sexiness

How many times have you seen or met someone and thought, “They just ooze sexiness.” Have you ever heard someone say that a person has “animal magnetism”?

Does that possibly mean that an individual has more sexual energy than those around her? Does it mean that when two people are “attracted” to each other, they are literally drawn together because they possess complementary energies, kind of like the positive and negative ends of a magnet?

It’s kind of fun thinking about sex and attraction in terms of energy and it definitely would explain myths like those of the succubi who drain people of their life forces through sexual activity.

In THE LOST and then in THE CLAIMED (May 2012), you’re going to meet a Shadow Hunter whose affinity is sexual energy. Maya, a villain in the books, feeds off the arousal of others and can also create intense need in those around her because of the force of her sexual energy.

Today’s Guilty Pleasure could probably play a very sexy Maya because she’s totally hot. If you saw her in the first UNDERWORLD, I’m sure you would agree that Kate Beckinsale is a great choice for today’s Guilty Pleasure/Discover THE LOST energies discussion.

Have you ever met anyone who possesses that kind of sexiness/magnetism? What about movie stars? Many think Johnny Depp has that kind of sexiness. Who are some of your sexy favorites?

Discover THE LOST Energies

By now you know that I’ve got two releases coming up, THE FIFTH KINGDOM a romantic suspense, and THE LOST, a paranormal romance.

Now I don’t want to give too much away about either of them, but after considering it for some time, it occurred to me that they have something in common that has really grabbed my attention: Magical and mystical energies.

In THE FIFTH KINGDOM, the energy comes from an ancient relic discovered in what could be Montezuma’s tomb. The relic is a copy of the Aztec Sun Stone sitting the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. The original sun stone is about 12 feet in diameter and weighs about 24 metric tons. You can read more about the original here.

The relic in the book is similar in terms of its look, but it is small enough to hold in your hands and made of obsidian and silver on stone. It is very different in one important way: It has mystical powers which are released once it comes in contact with something very sacred.

What can be so sacred? What about blood?

Now I won’t spill about whose blood awakens the energy in the relic or what it is because I don’t want to spoil the story for you.

Those energies, whether in relics, nature or in people, are all around us I think. As I said, that’s what inspired me for the two stories.

For THE LOST it was my visits down to the shore and the power I’d feel in nature, but also in the people gathered on Sunday mornings for Pavilion Praise in Ocean Grove. The gathering of that many people focused on one thing creates almost palpable energy to me.

It made me remember that I had felt something similar on a Palm Sunday many years back when my family and I went to Rome for Holy Week. Walking into St. Peter’s Square when it was filled with thousands of people joined together was seriously an amazing experience.

Those energies in us and around us is what inspired the SIN HUNTERS, a race of people capable of harnessing and using those energies for all kinds of cool things.

In the next few weeks, I’d like to explore with you those LOST energies. Find out if you believe or not in whether such powers can exist in nature, people or things.

For today, I’ll leave you with the Aztec Sun Stone and it’s supposed abilities to predict the end of THE FIFTH KINGDOM and also, the video premiere for the novel.

I’d love to hear from you as to whether you believe in THE LOST energies as we explore some other relics, people who see auras and sense energies, and all other kinds of cool things!

Don’t forget that on Thursday I’ll be having a live video event with Jeaniene Frost where we’ll be chatting about sexy urban fantasy and its heroes and heroines. If you can’t see the widget below, you can go to this link: http://t.wbx.me/fbam1 for the live video event.

Guilty Pleasure Monday Eddie Cibrian

Good morning! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend! I spent mine down the shore doing more research for the SIN HUNTER paranormal romance series and snapping off photos of the various locations which I will share with you later.

So who is today’s Guilty Pleasure?

When I first thought of the hero in my new romantic suspense novel, THE FIFTH KINGDOM, there was no doubt in my mind who Bill Santana would look like: Eddie Cibrian.

This picture of him looking all dark and dangerous was shot at Vandenberg Air Force during an FBI and U.S. Air Force explanation of how intelligence is gathered for bomb explosions. The info was being used for a television show in which Eddie was participating.

Hope you enjoyed today’s Guilty Pleasure.
