Cisco quickened his pace, following his partner deeper and deeper into the ruins, and then Havana suddenly dropped down to lie on the ground.
Cisco’s muttered curse echoed against the concrete of the confined hallway.
“What is it?” she asked, unable to see much as Cisco shifted the light away from where Havana sat.
“Stay here,” Cisco said softly, tempering his tone in a way that made her stop and wait.
He moved ahead to join Havana, and as the flashlight beam moved across the floor of the hall, she noticed it then.
The concrete of the wall had crumbled for quite a distance in that area, bringing a cascade of sand and dirt into the hallway. Several feet of sand, dirt and cement.
Cisco urged Havana up onto the mound of debris, and the beagle sniffed around before dropping down again.
It was clearly not a good signal.
As Cisco walked back to her, his phone squawked to life, surprising her considering how much dirt and cement surrounded them.
He answered, and a second later, he rushed in her direction, hauling Havana with him. “We need to get out,” he said, but before they could take a step, the air around them was filled with a deafening roar.
