Free Read from Brickell Avenue Ambush

This Write Wednesday I’m sharing an excerpt from Brickell Avenue Ambush, #2 in the South Beach Security romantic suspense series. As I mentioned, I love this story about ordinary people pulled into extraordinary situations. Not only do Ricky and Mariela have to stop Mariela’s abusive ex-husband from hurting her, they also have to stop him from possibly killing dozens of people. In this scene, Ricky and Mariela are going out to inspect a construction site that may hold the key to saving those lives when they are attacked by an unknown assailant. He’ll keep her safe
Even as their attraction intensifies with every hot Miami night…

Mariela Hernandez has a target on her back, thanks to her abusive ex-husband’s latest plot. Teaming up with Ricky Gonzalez and his family’s respected private security firm is her only chance at survival. Keeping the vulnerable woman safe isn’t easy. Neither is denying their growing attraction. But with bullets flying, Ricky will risk it all to be the hero Mariela needs….

Excerpt

Mariela raised the binoculars and surveyed the construction location. He was right that it was far from typical. She’d been on many a job site to show investors around and they’d always been a hub of activity. “It’s not,” she said and zoomed in to look at where a number of workers sat on a large pile of steel beams, playing a game of cards.

“It looks like they’ve driven the steel piles for securing the foundation. That usually means they’d be pouring concrete by now,” she explained and handed Ricky the binoculars.

He was about to raise them when the windshield of the speedboat suddenly cracked, and a Sea-Doo raced past them. The rider turned, his face mostly hidden by the cowl of the wetsuit he wore, and fired at them again, shattering another section on the windshield.

Mariela ducked down, but Ricky whipped out a gun and opened fire on the Sea-Doo. The rider must have thought better of attacking again and sped away from them, bouncing across the waves created by the wake of a passing boat.

“Hang on,” Ricky said, whipped their boat around and chased after the Sea-Doo, catching up to it easily with the greater power of the speedboat.

Ricky stayed on the tail of the Sea-Doo, trying to get a better look at the rider, but as the Sea-Doo turned toward land, Ricky had to slow down and then stop. The large outboard engines, which had given him the speed to catch up to their shooter, prevented him from entering the shallower waters.

He banged his hand in frustration against the steering wheel and cursed. “He got away. Are you okay?”

“Bounced around a little, but okay otherwise,” she said.

“We need to head back, but first…” He whipped out his phone and dialed Trey. When his brother answered, he said, “We were attacked again. Rider on a Sea-Doo. He was headed toward the eastern side of Bal Harbour the last time I saw him.”

“How do you know it’s a ‘him’?” Trey asked.

“Too big and bulky for a woman. He had the same build as the person who shot at us yesterday,” he said, recalling what he’d seen of the watercraft rider and yesterday’s attacker.

“I’ll call some friends on the force there and have them ask around at the local marinas. He has to pull in somewhere,” Trey said.

“Thanks. We’re headed back to the house,” he said, but plopped into the captain’s chair as his knees suddenly felt weak.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” Mariela asked and laid a hand on his chest, directly above his heart.

He took hold of her hand and brought it to his lips. “I’m fine. Just a little shaken, as I imagine you are.”

“I am. I’ll be better once we’re home,” she said with a smile.

Home. The word sounded nice coming off her lips. Those full lips that he’d thought about last night as he’d finally drifted off to sleep. He found himself shifting toward her, closer and closer to those lips he wanted to taste until the rev of an engine reminded him they weren’t safe out here on open water.

He stroked a hand across her cheek, trailing his thumb along the line of her lips. “Let’s go home.”

Let’s Get Going for the New Year

I plan on trying to get healthier in 2023 and one of the things I am going to do is make an actual plan. The first step is to set reasonable goals and here they are for starters:

    1. Get up and move every hour when I am writing.
    2. Try to get in at least 10,000 steps a day.
    3. Get back to doing some strength training even if it’s only a few cable pulls, kettle bell swings, or deadlifts.
    4. Eat healthier, especially more fruits and vegetables.

To stay honest with myself, I’m going to write it down and also track what I can with the new Fitbit that hubby got me as a Christmas present! If you want to also track what you’re doing, you can get a free weekly workout planner at https://www.experimentsinwellness.com/weekly-workout-planner/. This website also has a free weekly meal planner and offers new workouts every week at their Facebook Page.

Winter Winter Go Away

I know winter has only just started, but I’m already counting down the days until Spring! Yes, I’m that bad about the cold. One of the things that helps me keep sane is going to the Philadelphia Flower Show in March. Thanks to Covid the show had shifted to June and an outdoor location, but apparently the show is back in March and at the Convention Center this year. I can’t wait to go!!!! Today’s Throwback Thursday photo is to a picture that I took of some hyacinths at one of of the shows. I love hyacinths and their scent. So lovely! If you’d like to see more Flower Show photos you can visit https://bit.ly/CaridadFlowerShow.

Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things

One of the things I love about Brickell Avenue Ambush is that the hero and heroine are ordinary people who are called to do extraordinary things. Ricky Gonzalez, the middle brother of the Gonzalez siblings, is a psychologist just starting his practice. Mariela Hernandez is trying to rebuild her life after divorcing her abusive husband a year earlier. Mariela is also caring for aging parents who are having health issues. When danger lands on their doorstep, they must find the courage to end a threat to not only Mariela’s life, but innocent people who may be hurt by the actions of Mariela’s ex. Another fun thing about Brickell Avenue Ambush is that you get to see what’s happening with Trey and Roni from Lost in Little Havana. To me that’s the fun part of a series — seeing what’s going on with characters you have come to care about. You learn more about the South Beach Security series at https://amzn.to/3vmxlKx.

Happy Book Birthday Brickell Avenue Ambush

OMG it’s the release day for Brickell Avenue Ambush, the second book in the South Beach Security series. I absolutely love how Ricky Gonzalez steps up to help protect Mariel Hernandez who is in danger from her abusive ex-husband. This is an emotional and action-packed story that will keep you turning the pages until the explosive end! This Teaser Tuesday, I’m sharing the first awkward encounter between Ricky and Mariela.

Excerpt

Ricky sat on the couch in his aunt’s office, sharing with her what he thought about the client she had sent him for a consult. “I think she’s experienced abuse based on what we discussed. Her husband regularly bullied her verbally and made her beg for money and time away from the house. He normally only let her out to do household errands and insisted on tracking her every move. There are also her accounts of how her husband would physically attack her.”

His aunt Elena nodded as she sat on the couch beside him. “We have a number of police reports about visits to the home. Neighbors called in because they were worried. She was also hospitalized a number of times because of his physical abuse.”

“It sounds like you have enough to build a self defense argument against the murder charge,” Ricky said, considering all the evidence his aunt had gathered.

“It does and I appreciate your help. Would you mind if I call in Dave Baker to confirm your analysis?” she asked.

He didn’t mind at all. He’d only just finished getting his PhD and license while Baker was an experienced psychologist well-known for his handling of domestic abuse victims. “Baker is an excellent choice, tia. His opinion will carry a lot of weight with the court.”

She leaned over and patted his knee. “Your opinion will be helpful also, Ricky. I see how well you’re doing with the members of your support group. In no time more people will be coming to you for help and for your opinion.”

“I hope so,” he said, but in the meantime, he was actively building his private practice, helping his aunt and the SBS when they needed it, as well as running his support group for people suffering from trauma.

His aunt’s phone rang, and she reached over and picked up the extension sitting on a table beside the sofa.

“This young lady wants to see me tonight?” Tia Elena said and did a quick look at her watch. With a resigned sigh, she said, “If Maggie recommended her to me, I can’t refuse. Please ask her to come over as soon as she can.”

“Another late night, tia?” Ricky asked when his aunt hung up the phone.

“Sometimes it’s unavoidable,” she said, stood and held out her hand. “Thank you for helping me out.”

He cupped her hand with both of his and squeezed tenderly. “Thank you for trusting me enough to give me the business. I truly appreciate it.”

Tia Elena smiled indulgently. “The Gonzalez family sticks together.”

“We do, but only if you think I can do the job,” he said, not wanting the work if he wasn’t up to it.

“Of course, Ricky. I wouldn’t jeopardize my clients if I didn’t think you could handle it,” his aunt said and guided him toward the door to her office.

They exchanged a quick hug and a kiss on the cheek, and then he headed into the main space of the law firm where nearly a dozen attorneys and their staffs worked on assorted cases.

As he neared the door, an extremely attractive young woman entered. Sun-streaked, caramel-colored hair fell in soft waves around her heart-shaped face, accenting stunning eyes of deep emerald. She was casually dressed in jeans that hugged nicely rounded hips and thighs, and a flowing tunic top that did nothing to hide her voluptuous breasts.

His gut tightened in appreciation of her natural beauty, but he reminded himself that if this was the young woman who had just called for an appointment, she was likely a survivor of domestic abuse if Maggie Alonso had given her his aunt’s number.

Because of that, he gave her plenty of space as she hurried in, a wary look on her face as she saw him by the door. She was clearly leery of men, and it saddened him that she had experienced so much pain at such a young age. By his guesstimate, she couldn’t be more than thirty, but then again, abuse knew no age limits.

“Mariela Hernandez,” she said to the receptionist and shot a quick, suspicious look over her shoulder at him as he lingered by the entrance.

He raised his hands as if to say We’re cool and hurried out the door, his one hope that his aunt would be able to help her.
