The Sights, Smells and Sounds of Christmas

It’s my day on the holiday blog tour and I want to welcome you all here for my contribution to the holiday tour.

When I think about Christmas Eve, my mind is assaulted by the smells, flavors and sounds of my youth and of my present. It is also filled with hope for the future Christmas Eves and what they will bring.

The smells. Pine, sharp and almost biting as we drag in the tree. When we were kids, it was a visit to the local tree stand. I remember my mom crying one Christmas because she couldn’t afford the tree she wanted and my sister and I chipping in our savings to bring home that tree for her. Today we head out to the tree farm, my husband, daughter and me, and chop down the tree and sling it on the roof, a prized trophy to take home and hang with lights and ornaments collected over the years. Even some ornaments my mom handmade that always get a special place on the tree. They let me know she is still there with us in spirit.

Citrus, garlic and pork, slow roasting in the oven. I would always wake to that smell and know it was Noche Buena. A time for family, friends and hope. In those first cold days in New York, the hope was to go home to Cuba. Volveremos my parents and their friends would say around the holiday table crammed with people and food. We’ll go home, but they never did.

I am home now. Here. My roots in the soil as firmly as those of the tree we just cut down. My love for this Nation as broad and wide as the branches of that pine. Maybe more. My wonderful friend, Lois Winston, made me a beautiful needlework pillow with a motif of American flag designs. She said of all people I would appreciate it best because I was the most patriotic person she knew. It brought tears to my eyes.

The sounds. Pots and pans banging in the early morning, like church bells calling me to rise from bed and come help out in the kitchen because family and company are coming for this very special day. My grandma and mom would be there, bustling about to prepare the meal. To keep traditions alive as they share tales of cooking with their mothers and grandmothers.

Drop a penny in the water and dunk the octopus, one, two, three times, my grandmother would instruct as my sister and I watched the poor little thing curl and slip beneath the boiling water. It always tasted better than it looked!

At night the music would come on and couples would dance, their hips pumping and bodies moving to the sounds of the Latin beats. Later would come a conga around the house, everyone laughing and enjoying being together.

The music is still there in my house. Christmas carols and Gloria Estefan. No congas anymore, unfortunately. I’m a Cuban with a genetic defect: I can’t move my hips and have no rhythm. LOL!

The sights. Deep, forest green broken by the shimmer of glass balls and the painted wood of various ornaments. Some from my childhood, like those my mom made. Others collected over the years by my family. It’s fun to look at them and see the phases of our lives, from Power Rangers to one for a first driving license. Hubby’s always tend to lean toward the Mets and channel surfing. Then there are others I’ve bought in some of the places we’ve been lucky enough to visit. Hawaii. Italy. Our hard work has been rewarded by many opportunities that neither my husband nor I had as children.

I’ve added a tradition to those of the past: A Christmas village. Every year we put it up, although this year my daughter has a new shop, so I had to do it alone. That’s the cycle of things, I guess. In time she’ll take over the tradition and I’ll be the one doing the helping. We try to add something new every year. This year there were a number of additions. A cheese shop my daughter and I bought last year. A flower shop my sister gave me. A hotel, haberdashery and some horse drawn carriages from my lovely friend Gail, who is cleaning up and knew I would appreciate the additions to my village.

Here’s a photo of it! I have more up on Facebook fan page for you to see! Don’t worry if you’re not on Facebook. These albums are open for public viewing.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this view into my holiday memories. Take a moment to visit these other artists and see what the have to share with you for this holiday season.

#ManCandyMonday, The Pen is Mightier than the Storm and The End of the World!

So much to do today and so little time so let’s start with the Man Candy! Today’s choice is Justin Tuck, defensive end for the New Jersey Giants (sorry NY. They play in JERSEY!!).

Justin is a fabulous ball player and also involved in a number of charities. This picture has him in serious mode, but he’s got a great smile. You may recognize him from the Subway television commercials. I love watching him chase after the quarterbacks and it’s no wonder he’s been selected to the Pro-Bowl for his feats on the field!

Next up! Thank you to my lovely friend Steph and everyone else at Fangs, Wands and Fairy Dust for letting me visit with them today. I’m sharing my thoughts on Hurricane Sandy and the damage to the Jersey Shore. We’re also having a giveaway of a copy of THE FIFTH KINGDOM (one of my favorites!) for one lucky participant.

Last, but not least, the end of the world is almost upon us! Visit with me and Bianca D’Arc at the International Heat blog as we chat about what we’d love to do and whether or not our alien overlords will arrive on December 21. Follow the instructions on the blog for a chance to win one of the many prizes being offered as part of the End of the World party!

Thursday 13 – Thoughts about the Christmas Season

It’s been a long time since I’ve done a Thursday 13, so I thought it was about time to take a moment and reflect on the upcoming holiday season and share some thoughts with you!

1. Family and friends, and not things, are what matter most.
2. I am blessed to have a wonderful daughter. I just wish she was neater.
3. My husband is loving and supportive.
4. I know there are people always better off than me, but also worse off than me so I will not let envy guide what I do.
5. I am grateful for all the friends I have made thanks to my writing. You all bring me immense joy.
6. I want to help others this holiday season with the desire that they will find hope if they are down.
7. Let me find my love of snow once again. It’s so pretty and so much fun, but slogging to work in it isn’t.
8. Let it not be too cold this winter. Brrrr… I was not meant for the cold.
9. I will try to focus on what I can do to make things better for my family and friends.
10. I will try to be optimistic. I’ve lost that optimism in the last four years and it hasn’t been pretty.
11. I will focus on small acts to accomplish my goals rather than big intentions that don’t get fulfilled.
12. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day will be filled with fun, food, family and friends.
13. I wish for…

I’ve left the last one blank, in part because I could have kept going about all that I could wish for myself and others for this holiday season. Mostly, I wish for each and every one one of you to have peace and love and happiness!

What are some of your thoughts, wishes and hopes for the upcoming holiday season?

Christmas Fun!

With my daughter now running her shop, we had to mix two traditions together this Christmas season: Getting the tree and visiting New York City.

We started our morning yesterday with a run out to the Anne Ellen Tree Farm in Manalapan where we walked around in gorgeous weather to pick out our tree! We also pick out new ornaments to add to the tree each year. This is a picture of the ornament shop at Anne Ellen!

Then it was a rush home to get dressed and ready for our annual trip to New York City. We love seeing all the windows, visiting the NY Public Library to check out their exhibits, seeing the tree in Rockefeller Center and St. Patrick’s across the way before finally getting to Lincoln Center to watch the Nutcracker.

It was a day packed with walking and lots of fun and I’ve got a mess of pictures to share with you.

At the library, they had an exhibit on lunches in New York City. It was fun to see the evolution of city eateries, from the pushcarts to power lunches. The part of the exhibit on Horn & Hardart brought back memories of going to one with my mom. The last functioning automat was actually across the street from my old office! Here’s a shot of what they looked like.

Then we were off to see the tree in Rockefeller Center. It looked lovely this year!

We had a lovely time walking up Fifth Avenue and through part of Central Park before heading to our final destination – Lincoln Center!

Those are just some of the photos! To see more, you can click here.

What are some of your favorite holiday traditions?

#ManCandyMonday Prince Alexander Ivanov

You may be wondering what I had in mind when I thought up Prince Alexander from THE PRINCE’S GAMBLE.

Exotic would be a good word to describe him off the bat. FBI Agent Kathleen Martinez certainly thought so at her first meeting with the prince.

Despite his tone and attitude, it was hard for Kathleen to ignore that he was an incredibly handsome man. The pictures and clippings in her file had not done him justice.

Ivanov stood at least six foot two with broad shoulders that strained the expensive fabric of his designer suit. His well-muscled upper body flowed into lean hips and powerful legs.

She dragged her attention back to his face. The muscles in his chiseled jaw clenched with annoyance. It was hard to tell if he had full lips from the angry slash of his mouth. High cheekbones served to highlight winter blue eyes with an exotic tilt. Or maybe his eyes only seemed clear as the sky due to the midnight hair ruthlessly styled into place.

Two gorgeous men in one day, and just her luck they were both connected to her investigation. But while Detective Roman still possessed a hint of boyishness in his features, Alexander was a man with a capital M. Her flare of attraction to him was disturbing on several levels.

LOL, definitely a MAN with all caps. But the things that I found most intriguing about Alexander were the many layers to his personality. Alexander is a man shaped by hardship and yet privileged as few can be. That really brought a number of different traits to him that I found fascinating and that Kathleen did as well.

I hope you’ll enjoy finding out more about Alexander in THE PRINCE’S GAMBLE.

Now to leave you with a little of my inspiration for the prince!
