Kiss Me, Kill Me – Plum Island

Locations can play such an important role in not only providing an interesting backdrop for your story, but also in setting the mood. That’s one of the reasons I set some of the scenes in the first book in the SINS series, SINS OF THE FLESH, in the Pine Barrens. You can read more about the Pine Barrens by clicking here.

The Pine Barrens provided a rather uncivilized and dangerous place close to civilization which was perfect for those scenes.

Plum Island Animal Disease CenterLook around you and I’m sure you’ll find lots of others, like Plum Island. Growing up on Long Island, my always ambitious writer’s mind pictured what kinds of experiments would be happening on this island off the coast which houses an Animal Disease Center. The purpose of the center is to research pathogens which could affect animals, farms and ranches thereby impacting on the national food supply. To my writer’s mind, it always screamed biological weapons research. In fact, because of the sensitive nature of the Animal Disease Center, access to the island is severely restricted.

Because of that secrecy, the island remains fairly untouched which now presents an issue since the government has decided to close the Animal Disease Center and move it elsewhere. Recently, environmentalists were allowed a glimpse of the island which also houses an 1869 lighthouse in addition to the research facility. The hope is that the island will be maintained in its pristine and protected state.

Which allows writers like me, or Nelson DeMille who titled and set a novel on Plum Island, to continue weaving stories about its mysterious history! (You may also recall that in SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, Hannibal Lechter is promised a move to that location in exchange for assisting the FBI.)

Guilty Pleasures Monday – Phillie’s Chase Utley

With my beloved Mets out of post-season play (again!), I’m rooting for the NL East Champion Phillies to go all the way!

There are so many players on the Phillies that are certified cuties, but I’ll start with Mr. Dependable – Chase Utley. I just love his work ethic and his boy-next-door charm. Did I mention his good looks as well?

Here’s hoping you get another ring, Chase!

Fun Friday – OMG! So glad it’s Friday

I don’t know about you, but it’s been a long and tiring week at the office and with the writing. Pulling double-duty on two jobs is a bear at times.

So to bring both you and me a little cheer today, here’s a link to some funny billboards:

http://www.worksucks.com/fun-stuff/funny-billboards

I’m torn as to which is my favorite between the Speedo ad (and having seen more than one such sight on the beach this summer – BLECH) and the Farmer John billboard ad.

How about you? Which one did you think was the funniest? Have you seen any that you’d like to share with us?

Thursday 13 – Things to do Down the Shore!

There is nothing more that I like to do than to go Down the Shore as the Jersey folk say. (The real Jersey folk and not Gym/Tan/Laundry crowd from that show that will remain nameless). Being down the shore is so relaxing and stimulates my creative juices. I get a mess of writing done whenever I am there.

So today I am sharing with you those things that I love to do Down the Shore. The real Jersey Shore.

1. Walk along the boardwalk from Avon-by-the-Sea up to Asbury Park. Each town along the way – Avon, Bradley Beach, Ocean Grove and Asbury – has a unique flavor and peaceful surroundings.

2. Grab a lobster dinner at the Columns in Avon. The views of the ocean are great and the food is good.

3. Grab a book and a beach chair and relax in Bradley Beach. Much less crowded than at other beaches and totally family friendly.

4. Go for a bike ride along Ocean Avenue. We’ve gone as far as Long Branch and it’s a fun ride with views of the ocean and some really amazing homes.

5. Lunch at Windmill Hot Dogs. Yum.

6. Browse the many interesting shops along Ocean Grove’s Main Avenue.

7. Explore Ocean Grove’s amazing Victorians and the totally unique tent city.

8. Hit Asbury Park’s Convention Center, Paramount Theatre, WunderBar or Stone Pony for some music or the Jersey Shore Roller Girls.

9. Get some tomato pie from Vic’s or Pete and Elda’s.

10. Get a cannoli from Del Ponte’s in Bradley Beach.

11. Take in a movie at the Palace Theatre Beach Cinema, an eighty year old landmark in Bradley Beach.

12. Visit the library for one of their books, art shows, workshops or community events.

13. Stop and listen to the Pavilion Praise on the Ocean Grove boardwalk on Sunday mornings. No matter what your religious bent, you will feel the positive vibes with the melding of faith and nature on a glorious summer morning.

Hope you enjoyed today’s Thursday Thirteen. I welcome you to add any of your suggestions for what you like to do Down the Shore in the comments section.

Lisa Renee Jones‘ contribution – AMBER FIRE – to the SEXY BEAST 9 anthology hit shelves in September! Here’s a sexy little teaser from that novella:

Determined to defend her late father’s work, Amber Green heads into the heat of the Nevada canyons to prove the existence of the Yaguara, a shape-shifting race of jaguars. There she meets the one man more hell-bent on protecting the jaguars than she is: Jareth, a force of raw male nature to be reckoned with—an animal worth pursuing…

This second book in the SINS series follows SINS OF THE FLESH with an equally compelling and scintillating tale of mad scientists, devoted doctors and wounded warriors. There isn’t a thing missing in this imaginative and fast-paced love story.

Kiss Me, Kill Me Tuesday – The Basics of Hacking

Today I have a special guest with me! James Mowery is a computer geek who writes about technology and related topics. James is here today to offer us some insights into the Basics of Hacking. To read more blog posts by James, please visit him at www.laptopcomputers.org

Without further ado, here’s James!

*****

Hacking is a rapidly lost art in this world. While the reports of cybercrime are on the rise, these very rarely involve hacking of any kind, but rather the simple exploitation of a system’s owner through duplicity and the use of a script that the ‘hacker’ didn’t actually assemble themselves. These unscrupulous individuals, also known as ‘script kiddies’, are not truly hackers, but rather the web’s equivalent of cowardly bullies too afraid to take an actual swing at their target.

Hacking takes three primary traits: knowledge of computer systems, knowledge of networking, and raw chutzpah.

The rudiments of hacking hark back to the days of telephone modems and analog distance communication; previously, phase-shifted dial tones were used to duplicate and deceive phone companies, allowing for free long-distance calls to be made. In one larger assault, Pacific Bell’s clocks were shifted twelve hours, allowing everyone on their more common plans to use the much cheaper night rate for their daytime calls.

Now, hacking revolves around manipulation of data taken in to create a desired result. An example of this is perhaps the most basic means by which to seize control of a website: the buffer overflow. Many systems are not unlike any liquid vessel; there is finite room. The data can be thought of as liquid. Buffer overflow attacks involve inputting so much data into an open, unsecured field on a site that the data actually overflows past the memory and is forced to execute. If the attack is being done with proper code, this code will actually be injected into the system, allowing the hacker to commandeer it, damage it, or anything else.

Wirelessly, hackers should be aware of packets. Packets are the bits of data sent by computer systems to each other. They are often encrypted little nuggets of data that will make no rational sense to anyone simply viewing them raw, even if they are decrypted. However, packets can often contain private information that hackers can use for purposes of identity theft. A patient hacker can intercept many of these packets over time, and begin to decrypt them in batches. Once the encryption is broken through this method, they can begin to send packets of their own, once again burying their own code to be executed.

Hacking is an art finding itself lost, but these two basic techniques open the doors to the rest of it, for any willing to experiment and experience it.

Thank you, James! We appreciate you taking the time to visit with us and share your knowledge of hacking.

Guilty Pleasure Monday – Hawaii Five-O

It was a hard choice for this Monday: Alex O’Loughlin or Scott Caan. Bottom line: It was too hard a choice to make so I’m sharing both of them with you in this clip from Hawaii Five-O. I am so loving this show. The cast is wonderful together and the episodes have been great so far.

I’d love to hear from you if you’re liking it and if you can choose who is the bigger hottie. Alex or Scott?
