Thursday 13 – Breaking Writer’s Block

Writer’s Block. Two of the most dreaded words for writers besides synopsis and revisions. Writer’s Block happens to all of us. Sometimes it lasts a day or so. Other times it lasts for weeks. What can you do to help break past the walls that are blocking your creativity? Well, here are 13 suggestions for getting those creative juices flowing!

1. Take a long shower or bath. Try to think of nothing except the warmth of the water or slickness of the soap and just how relaxing it is.

2. Savor a favorite drink. Whether it’s hot chocolate, wine or coffee, sit down and focus on just the drink and nothing else. Let yourself enjoy the nuances of it, from heat to nuttiness to floral overtones.

3. Take a long walk. Preferably near somewhere scenic. Again, think about nothing except what is around you. The wind, the smells, the sights and the sounds should take priority.

4. Ground yourself. I have to say I have not done this myself, but my trainer at the Y says it works. Take off your shoes and go outside and tickle your toesies in the grass/dirt for at least thirty to forty-five minutes. Imagine yourself becoming one with the Earth once again.

5. Exercise. Whether it’s yoga, strength training, a jog, etc. get the blood flowing throughout your body and brain.

6. Read a good book. I like to read books outside my genre to see how the author puts the story together.

7. Watch a movie. Much like reading a book, let your mind process the scenes and how they flow (or don’t) and think about what made the movie work.

8. Buffy the Vampire Slayer. No matter what, watching one of the old shows helps me see how wonderful characters are created and sharp dialogue can deliver a jab as potent as any punch.

9. Go to Writer’s group or workshop. I belong to the Liberty States Fiction Writers and I find that going to meetings and listening to the workshops always inspires me to write.

10. Shut off your network card. Oftentimes I find that my “block” is actually just distraction caused by the Internet and the time suck it creates.

11. Visit a new place. Go somewhere interesting and explore the sights. It doesn’t have to be far. I took a short trip to Sandy Hook which inspired tons of scenes for my SIN HUNTER series.

12. Visit a favorite place. Remember what it was about that place that made it special. Explore once again the sights, sounds and feel that made it favorite.

13. Talk to a friend. Sometimes you just need to vent. If they’re a writer friend, they’ll understand and may be able to offer up an idea to deal with whatever plot/character/setting problem has stopped you in your tracks.

Hope you enjoyed today’s Thursday Thirteen. I welcome you to add any of your suggestions for breaking writer’s block in the comments section.

The Sig Sauer P226 on Kiss Me, Kill Me Tuesday

A few weeks ago we discussed the importance of choosing a weapon you can handle in the Hit Me With Your Best Shot blog. As the videos in that blog attested, unless you have some reason for your hero to end up on her ass after firing, the right weapon is essential.

Choosing the right weapon is also necessary to add some level of authenticity and/or help reinforce your character’s personality or history. For example, in MORE THAN A MISSION, the hero is ex-military and has participated in a number of clandestine missions. Because of that, his weapon had to be one which might have been favored by military men and which might allow for use of a silencer/suppresor.

After doing some research, I decided on a Sig Sauer pistol in order to reinforce the hero’s military past and secret agent kind of work. In particular, the Sig Sauer P226 would make a perfect weapon in such a situation.

The pistol was specifically designed for Army small weapons trials in 1984. It was only one of two guns to meet the challenges of the trials. Originally designed by Sig, a Swiss company, it was later manufactured in connection with Sauer, a German company, due to Swiss export regulations on hand guns.

The P226 chamber can use certain 9mm, .40 caliber S&W or .357 Sig ammunition. When fired, the slide and barrel lock together until the bullet leaves the chamber and after, the slide recoils back, expelling the spent cartidrige. In the next step, a spring moves the slide forward which chambers another round from the magazine in the handle. During the last part of the slide motion, the barrel moves back into place and the slide and barrel lock together once again.

You can use guns which use a slide in your novels since those unfamiliar with their operation, or involved in a struggle when the weapon discharges, will sometimes suffer what is known as “slide bite”. This happens when your thumb or any flesh nearby is too high up on the back of the weapon. When the trigger is pulled, the action of the slide causes injury to that part of the hand, usually some kind of cut. Slide bite will leave DNA on the weapon and also, visible injuries on whoever handled the gun when it was fired.

In the 1980s, Navy Seals began using a P226 which had been adapted to their use. Eventually special commemorative versions of these weapons were available for sale to the public to raise money for the Special Operations Warrior Fund, an organization which provides full scholarship grants and educational and family counseling to the surviving children of special operations personnel who die in operational or training missions and immediate financial assistance to severely wounded special operations personnel and their families.

The P226 Tactical weapon has an extended barrel and threads which allow it to be fitted with a silencer.

Today’s photo shows a stainless steel P226 which never went into production although a different stainless steel model is now available.

Hope you enjoyed today’s Kiss Me, Kill Me Tuesday. Thanks to Wikipedia for some of the information and also to Sig-Sauer.

Guilty Pleasure Monday Leonardo DiCaprio

I know there are those who will disagree with me, but I find Leonardo DiCaprio extremely sexy. There is just something about him that smolders and his gaze seems to convey a wisdom far beyond his years. I guess that’s part of it–to me one of the sexiest parts of a man is his brain!

The first movie of his that I remember seeing was WHAT’S EATING GILBERT GRAPE (which also starred Johnny Depp). He stole the movie and garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

He was passable in TITANIC, but brilliant in THE AVIATOR, one of my all time favorites (especially since it also has Kate Beckinsale playing Ava Gardner).

I could go on because Leo has been in so many blockbuster movies, but I won’t because I’d like to hear whether you like Leo and if so, what are your favorite movies. I’ve still got SHUTTER ISLAND and INCEPTION on my list of must-sees and as soon as I finish my revisions, I’m going to treat myself to a Leo-Fest.

Fun Friday – What kind of accent do you have?

Okay – I couldn’t stay away today because I had to share this fun quiz with you that came by way of my BIL Peter! Here are my results which were spot on. Take the quiz for yourself to see how accurate it is. If you can’t see the quiz results below, you can cut and paste this link into your browser: http://gotoquiz.com/what_american_accent_do_you_have

Another way to tell a real New Yorker: Ask them to say, “There’s a flaw in the floor” and see how “flaw” and “floor” sound. They should not sound the same.

What American accent do you have?

Your Result: The Northeast

Judging by how you talk you are probably from north Jersey, New York City, Connecticut or Rhode Island. Chances are, if you are from New York City (and not those other places) people would probably be able to tell if they actually heard you speak.

Philadelphia

The Inland North

The Midland

The South

Boston

The West
