Guilty Pleasures Monday – Keanu Reeves

If you asked me if I was a Keanu Reeves fan, I wouldn’t immediately say so, but when I look at all the keeper movies on my shelves, I realize that after Johnny Depp, the #1 male actor on the shelves is Keanu Reeves.

I guess what prompted today’s Guilty Pleasures Monday was a dearth of anything television or football and so hubby and I ended up watching THE REPLACEMENTS. I’m not sure how the film did, but it’s one of those kinds of movies that has it all — romance, action, comedy, emotion. Keanu does a great job as Shane Falco, a never was football hero who manages to find his inner hero and spur others to a momentary spot of glory and finding their dreams.

So what other sports movies are worth another look or possible addition to my list of keepers? Here goes (in no particular order):

Back to Keanu, however, what keepers of his do I highly recommend? SPEED with Sandra Bullock and A WALK IN THE CLOUDS. Both are wonderful movies! The action in SPEED is great and the cinematography and romance in A WALK IN THE CLOUDS is delicious.

Funny Friday – Witty Words from the Washington Post

My friend Liz Kimberlin passed on a list words that supposedly come from the Washington Post’s Mensa Invitational, which invites readers to take any word from the dictionary and alter it by adding, subtracting or changing one letter to produce a new definition. Anyone who has bought a home which is historic (translation way old) or quaint (bordering on small) or has potential (needs renovations) or has watched THE MONEY PIT totally understands this new word:

Thoughtful Thursday – The Values Hollywood Glorifies

I was sad to hear of Heath Ledger’s passing in New York, apparently from some kind of drug overdose. I remember first seeing him in one of my favorite movies, 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU. I thought there was something undeniably charismatic about him, crazy hair notwithstanding. With his OSCAR-nominated appearance in BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, he seemed on his way to being one of the best actors of his generation. Worldbuilding

As an author, you do hold the world in the palm of your hands when creating your novel. This is particularly true if you are writing science fiction, fantasy or paranormals (the SFP from now on to save some time).

What’s the first thing to do on your way to building a world for your novel? The first thing to do is to decide what kind of world it is, namely:

Normal World: In a normal world, the SFP elements exist beneath the radar of most of the normal world’s inhabitants. The rules of the normal world are still followed. A good example of an SFP in a normal world are THE CALLING Vampire novels.

Nope, you read that right! THE CALLING is headed to Miami next year. After FURY CALLS, which will feature sexy punk vampire Blake Richards and Meghan Thomas, we’re going to take a little trip south for a change of pace in ARDOR CALLS. Thoughtful Thursday – Back to Bashing Romance

Bashing Romance Again You may have seen the news and the surrounding brouhaha about the alleged acts of plagarism by bestseller Cassie Edwards. In case you’ve missed it, you can check out the allegations at the Smart Bitches blog.

It’s disturbing to think that a writer of 100 novels with 10 million copies in print may have committed these acts. I say “alleged” and “may have” because I won’t jump on the band wagon to pillory this woman. There are enough people out there doing that.

What I will take a moment to point out is that whether Ms. Edwards is guilty or innocent, there is one huge nameless victim out there — the Romance genre since some have taken the opportunity to bash Romance in their discussions about what Ms. Edwards is claimed to have done.
