Hello Monday

A Special Wine for a Special Birthday

My daughter and her hubby are taking us out tonight for our birthdays (hubby and I share the same day)! I’ve had this bottle of wine for a very long time and while I was downsizing, I realized it was from a limited vintage. I decided to go online and see what it was worth. To my surprise, one of the wine sites said it was valued at 1500 Euros (1800 dollars). WOW! It made me wonder if I should sell the bottle, but I really couldn’t vouch for its condition. As far as I knew, it hadn’t been in extreme heat or sunlight and the cork was still wet, but I wouldn’t want to mislead anyone, especially at that price. So after a family meeting, we decided we would open it tonight to celebrate a very special birthday. It’s either going to be a very expensive vinegar or an interesting wine experience. I’ll let you know! P.S. – Don’t forget to enter my Birthday Giveaway at https://bit.ly/CaridadBirthdayGiveaway for a chance to win some awesome goodies including a $25 gift card!

A Birthday Gift from Nature

About three years ago I bought an orchid because it was an unusual one. It wasn’t in bloom when I got it and it took about six months before it bloomed. There were only a few blooms on it and I waited and waited for more. Fast forward two years and I finally am seeing it bloom again right near my birthday! A lovely gift from nature especially since I’m not a patient person and was close to giving up on this orchid ever blooming again. Sharing this photo of the very first bloom. Isn’t it pretty? Also, don’t forget to enter my Birthday Giveaway at https://bit.ly/CaridadBirthdayGiveaway for a chance to win some awesome goodies including a $25 gift card! Hope you have a great Friday! We’re off to the Philly Flower Show today and I hope to share some photos from there soon!

Happy International Women’s Day

It’s International Women’s Day and on this day, I’d like to honor the women who shaped me and made me who I am: my mother Carmen and my grandmother Nieves. Carmen and Nieves were two remarkable women who overcame so much to build a life for our family. My grandmother left Spain for a better life in Cuba. My mother fought for freedom in Cuba only to have that snatched from her by Castro’s communist regime. Together these two women brought our family to the United States and built the American Dream for us. I think of them every day and want to thank them for their courage, wisdom, and the love they always provided. I miss you!

Chasing Away the Winter Chill

I am so not a lover of winter. I live for the warmer temperatures of summer. Luckily, we’ve had a mild winter and I see all the signs that spring is on its way. Flocks of robins. Snowdrops and crocuses poking their heads from the ground. The flower show and my birthday! Yep, it’s my birthday week and I’m going to be celebrating by having a giveaway tomorrow so be sure to drop in to enter! And if you’re like me, counting the days until summer, maybe chase away the winter chill with a visit to Miami in the South Beach Security series. Grandma’s Wonderful Recipe Stash

My husband’s Italian grandmother passed many years ago on her 103rd birthday. My daughter was very close to her “special grandma” and honored her by getting married on her birthday! Special grandma kept a box filled with recipes she clipped from newspapers and magazines as well as calendars from local stores and recipe books from various food companies. Somehow I inherited that box recently and went through it to see what to keep and what to toss. Special grandma was quite a cook so it was interesting to see what interested her. Recipes for pasta clipped from Ronzoni pasta boxes. Quite a few for pickles. Many many more for all kinds of cakes, pies, and cookies. A calendar from 1962 as well as lots of pamphlets on how to entertain and host the perfect party! Fascinating. The one thing I got a kick out of was Special Grandma’s list of food for a party. 10 pounds of roast beef. 2 pounds of pastrami and other cold cuts. Potato salad, macaroni salad, and cole slaw. Not what I would picture special grandma having for a party. I also found a recipe for spidini (which the paternal side of the family made) and I’m hoping it’s THE RECIPE for the spidini since no one has been able to find one. Searching through that box was a wonderful reminder of special grandma and an insight into what made her tick. Sunday Self Care

Even though I retired from my full-time job, Sundays are still my day to just chill. I do that by going to breakfast with a dear friend and just taking it easy by reading, writing, or doing a nice stroll on the boardwalk. Being near the ocean rejuvenates me! How about you? How do you self care on Sunday?
