In this scene, FBI Agent Diana Reyes is undercover in a bar where she suspects a serial killer is stalking his victims. She’s headed out of the club to investigate an alley when she runs into a possible suspect: sexy club owner Ryder Latimer.

She exited through the door into the chill of the alley. It had rained while she was inside. The dark stone walls and cobblestones glistened with wet, and water had puddled in various spots. The sky was dark with heavy clouds that obscured a half moon.

Goose bumps erupted on her skin from the sudden change in temperature. She rubbed at her arms and glanced at the back section of the blind alley. The shadows were strong, and unlike the area leading to the street, there were no lights.

With the lack of moonlight, it would be easy for someone to hide there, waiting. And yet, with no way out, they’d have to take the victims past the bouncer at the open door or the crowd at the far end of the alley. Unless the alley had a back way out.

She took a step toward the darkness, keeping the wall of the building behind her so as not to be surprised. She had gone deep into the alley, but had not yet reached the end when the eerie sensation from before returned. The hairs on the back of her neck tingled, as did those on her arms. As her eyes adjusted to the lack of light, a colder, deeper silhouette took shape a few feet in front of her.

It was a man. She squinted, but it was too dark to see his face even though he stood close. Too close for her to pull out her weapon. It was a true Mexican standoff, the two of them considering each other in the dim light, neither one speaking. In her ear, the running comments of various agents crackled and she tried not to let them distract her.

A few feet away, a small spot of moonlight appeared as the wind drove the clouds away. If the man across from her would only move that short distance, it might give her the answers she needed. “Step into the light,” she said, striving for a tone of authority despite the situation, hoping David and the others would hear.

The seconds of silence stretched out after her command and then came his short bark of a laugh. “And why would I want to do that?” he asked, his low voice gravelly, as if it had been a long time since he had used it. There was a trace of an accent. Southern, she thought. Louisiana, she confirmed as he issued his own determined instructions.

“Darlin’, if you have a lick of sense, you’ll turn right around and head back into the club.”

He surprised her with his tone of concern. She couldn’t take that statement at face value as the others may have done, turning their backs on this man and then finding themselves . . .

It was likely David would be here within minutes. His instructions were to keep her in sight, and he had known where she was heading. But she couldn’t wait for her partner. If this was the man, a delay might prove fatal and she had no intention of ending her life in an alley that stank of stale urine.

“Step into the light where I can see you and I’ll go,” she said calmly, not trusting that he would listen. Preparing for what she would do if he didn’t.

“Do you think — ”

“You’re a fool?” she finished for him.

He expelled a harsh breath and challenged, “I’m not the fool who’s running around with a killer loose.” Despite his comment, there was resignation in his voice, as if he, too, recognized that there was little either of them could do. She wasn’t surprised therefore when he said, “On three, we both move where we can see each another.”

“On three.”  She counted down. As promised, she took the few steps to her right, mirroring his movement.

As they both reached the safety of the light, she detected a note of surprise in his features before he carefully schooled them. He had a severe yet handsome face. His eyes were a flat, unholy black against the dark of the night. They were intense, unblinking. Soulless, she thought for a moment, but then abruptly, as her gaze finally met his, there was a moment of connection. Within her, there was a sudden strange sense of . . . recognition. She berated herself silently for letting her imagination get the better of her.

“Satisfied?” he asked, his voice still husky. He stood mere feet away, a commanding presence. Tall and strong-bodied, he was dressed all in black, like most of the crowd inside. Only, on him, it was more than just a color. It was an aura of dangerous energy that made her take a step back.

“Who are you?” she pressed, aware that they were still the only ones in the alley. She listened to the chatter on the wire. Nothing to indicate help was on the way.

Before Diana could register his intentions, he closed the distance between them and grabbed hold of her wrist, yanking her to him.

Years of training took over. An elbow to his face had him rocking backward and she followed with a jab that straightened him, leaving him totally vulnerable for a full-force roundhouse kick. She connected to the side of his head with a thick thud, and he tumbled to the rough cobblestones. Before she could react, he was on his feet and moving toward her once more.

Diana struck out with a quick chopping motion. He blocked her blow forcefully and thrust her away, which sent her flying into the brick wall.

Her head hit hard and stars danced across her vision. She fought off the dazing blow and pressed her hands against the rough surface of the wall, struggling to find purchase so she wouldn’t fall to the ground. The chatter had ceased in her ear, which meant the wire had stopped working, not that it had been doing much good up to this point.

As her assailant neared again, David finally called out, “Hold your position or I’ll fire.”

Chapter 1
Spanish Harlem, 2004

As lives went, both of hers had sucked. Still, life went on and on and on, and everyday things still had to be dealt with.

Samantha Turner bore the weight of the heavy bags without complaint. They were filled with groceries for the women and children at her shelter — The Artemis Shelter. She’d struggled to be able to make it a reality and had finally succeeded a few years ago.

Now she was finally doing something positive with this life. The shelter was a resting place; a halfway house where women and their children could heal and find a way out of the abusive relationships in their lives. With her help, many families had already broken the cycle of violence which had cursed Samantha’s existence.

The local Gristedes would have delivered the groceries, but after being trapped indoors all day long, Samantha wanted to go out into the night air. Savor the activity of the city that never slept. Revel in its humanity and prepare for another day of battling its cruelty.

The bags pulled at her arms, not that she minded. Just another half a block and she’d be home. Back at the shelter.

She rounded the corner onto her block and noticed the group lingering on the stoop next to the shelter — a few youths from the neighborhood and two younger children. It was nearly midnight. Too late for them and their hip hop music blaring from the boom box on the railing.

Despite the distance and the dark, Samantha was able to identify who loitered on the stoop: Juan Williams, his little brother and sister, plus an assortment of kids from Juan’s self-made posse. Mrs. Williams worked the late shift at a nearby hospital and Juan was supposed to take care of things when she was gone.

He did anything but, Samantha thought as she quickened her pace so that she could get the younger Williams children inside and in bed where their mother expected them to be. It was the kind of thing they all did for one another in the neighborhood — watching out for each other to try and improve their daily lives.

In the years since Samantha had brought the Artemis Shelter to this part of New York, life had gotten better for this block and that sense of community had slowly spread to the adjacent blocks. Funny that her little point of light came from something darker than most could begin to imagine.

Samantha was halfway down the street when a car came sharply around the corner, tires squealing it car swerved for a moment before the driver could right it. The squeal was not enough to hide the other noises Samantha heard. The lock and load sound of a weapon. The voices urging on the shooter as he stuck himself halfway out the open window of the car as it traveled toward her and the youths on the stoop.

So many in harm’s way. Too many, she thought.

Samantha dropped the bags and in the brief span of a second made a difficult decision. Accelerating beyond human speed, she grabbed the two youngest children and carried them down the stairs to the shelter’s lower level. She shoved them into a far corner of the stairwell before returning to street level to help the others.

The loud pop-pop-pop of gunfire erupted in the night. Bullets flew, striking sparks where they hit brick and stone. Splattering blood and bits of human where they connected with flesh and bone.

The teenagers scurried to get away, their bodies jerking and thrashing about as they failed to avoid the line of fire.

As Samantha reached for one youth, a bullet tore into her upper back and another lower, into her side, the impact of the bullets nearly knocking her over. She kept on moving, carrying the teenager away from the stoop and to the stairwell while the shooter continued to fire.

Then as suddenly as it began, it stopped. The car peeled away with another angry squeal of its tires. Samantha heard the congratulations and rejoicing of its occupants. Anger rose up sharply within her. She left the children and teenager in the stairwell and raced after the car, intent on retribution, the animal within wanting vengeance.

As she neared the back of the car, the human side of her rose up. Instead of going for the throat of the nearest occupant, she memorized the faces of those responsible, and then dropped back and noted the car’s license plate number.

When the car whipped around the far corner, Samantha stopped chasing it. Others needed her. Even this far down the block, the smell of gun smoke and blood was strong. Too strong, Samantha thought, battling the urge threatening to overwhelm her.

She took a deep breath, began a slow walk back to the stoop. In the distance there was already the sound of a siren, fast approaching. It grated on her sensitive hearing and she reached up to cover her ears.

The familiar touch of his strong hand came against her shoulder. She turned.

“They can’t see you like that,” he said, motioning with his free hand to her face. “And you’re hurt.”

“I’ll be okay, Ricardo, but . . . Is there anything you can do for the others?” Samantha asked him and gestured down the block to where bodies littered the stoop and sidewalk.

Ricardo slipped off his jacket and draped it around her shoulders, revealing his naked chest and a low-slung pair of pajama bottoms. He’d clearly just run out of his place — a small botanica on the corner of her block — without bothering to change.

“I’m not sure — ”

“Someone has to see to them. I can’t go back right now,” Samantha said. There were too many things trapping her in her current state — her anger, the smell of blood and the pain from her injuries. She couldn’t afford to have her secret revealed to anyone else.

Ricardo nodded, reached into the pocket of his jacket and handed her the keys to his place. “Go and rest. I’ll do what I can.”

Samantha thanked him, and then quickly gave Ricardo a description of the occupants of the car and the license plate number. With his keys in hand, she fled to the safety of Ricardo’s botanica. Once inside, the smells of the various herbs, flowers and candles he kept there calmed her heightened senses. She moved slowly toward the back of the shop and the steps leading up to Ricardo’s living area.

She’d been there often. Many in the neighborhood suspected them of being lovers. None could have guessed the true nature of their relationship.

Samantha slipped off his jacket and draped it over the small sofa in the parlor before Ricardo’s bedroom. Slowly she walked to his bathroom to wash the blood off her hands and wondered how many had been killed. Guilt flooded her that she hadn’t been able to save more of them.

Gazing up at the mirror, she saw nothing. No guilt. No anguish. No image. She hadn’t seen one in over one hundred and forty one years.

She eased off her shirt, reached up and ran her hand over the burning spot high on her shoulder. There was but a half-closed hole left and beneath her fingers, there was the shifting of muscle as her body slowly expelled the bullet that had ripped into her flesh.

Further down, along her side, was a ragged exit wound where the bullet had passed completely through her. Here as well the bleeding had stopped and the wound was already beginning to knit.

It would take a little longer, but not much. The healing would leave her weak, however.

Samantha slipped her shirt back on and headed for Ricardo’s bedroom and the rocker he kept there so that she could rest. The rocker reminded her of her mother and how she’d sway Samantha to sleep as a child. She curled up on the rocker’s worn wooden seat, thinking whatever blood managed to escape her wounds would be easy to clean from the chair’s surface. Huddling tight, she rocked back and forth, and thought, “Maman, will it never end?”

#FreeRead For Love and Vengeance from the Sorcery and Steam Bundle

I’m taking part in a great new project — the Sorcery and Steam Story Bundle. This bundle is a collection filled with magic, fantasy, suspense, bad guys, mythic creatures, goddesses and a little bit of romance!

My contribution to the story is For Love or Vengeance, a unique story from The Calling is Reborn Vampire series. Unique because the vampires are not at the forefront of the story. Instead we have a Greek Goddess taking the lead in order to help a host of FBI Agents find the Broadway Butcher, a serial killer who is murdering aspiring young actors and musicians. You’ll get to meet Nemesis, the Greek Goddess of Vengeance who has taken human form as FBI Agent Helene Alexander and her partner, Miguel Sanchez.

For those of you who are familiar with The Calling series, you’ll also get to see some old friends again, like FBI Agent Diana Reyes and her vampire lover Ryder Latimer. You’ll be surprised at what’s up in their lives and I hope you’ll take the time to read the next books in the series which take you on a whirlwind ride filled with romance, suspense, and lots of nasty vampires that need to be staked!

Here’s an excerpt from For Love or Vengeance for you from the Sorcery and Steam Story Bundle.

Excerpt

Prologue
Mount Olympus

The chase was on once again.

Nemesis sensed her father’s growing anger as he sought her out along the halls of Olympus. She had just returned from another mission down on Earth with the humans, her goals twofold. First: to make sure justice was served so that the puny mortals would not fall into chaos and disorder. Second, and possibly more important to her on a personal level: avoiding her father’s rutting ways.

It had been nearly a month since he had taken her, brutally and against her will. Not that it bothered him that he had hurt her, physically and mentally. For that matter, it didn’t seem to bother her mother or any of the other denizens of Olympus, none of whom were bold enough to challenge Zeus.

As Nemesis raced into the furthest wing of the palace nestled amongst the clouds, Zeus’s bellow shook the walls and the ground beneath her bare feet.

To the humans below the sound would seem like thunder, but to the other gods and goddesses lingering about the palace, it instilled fear since they understood such a mood always brought punishment.

Nemesis sped to her room as quickly as she could, wanting to escape back to Earth before Zeus could lay his hands on her once more.

As she opened the door to her chamber, she realized she was too late. Zeus was already there, lying across the center of her bed, his head of golden curls pillowed against his muscled arms. At first glance he seemed the picture of contentment, but when she met his gaze, thunderbolts of fury lit his celestial blue eyes.

“You’ve been ignoring me, daughter,” he said, swinging his legs over the edge of the bed and slowly rising to his towering height. His presence was immense as the force of his energies buffeted her psyche.

She ducked her head, wishing she could disappear into herself. “I’ve been spreading justice as you’ve commanded, Father.”

Zeus laughed and the sound rumbled throughout the palace.

A second later her mother, Hera, flew into the room and came to stand beside her.

“Husband, is something wrong?” her mother asked, the tones of her voice demure since she, too, sensed Zeus’s growing rage.

“Our daughter avoids me. She claims it is because she is on my mission—”

“I am,” Nemesis insisted, raising her head to meet her father’s stormy gaze.

“Silence,” he commanded, and clapped his hands, the noise almost deafening. It shook the clouds beneath their feet and was followed by a bolt of lightning that burst from his palms.

Both she and her mother lowered their heads once more, and with a satisfied huff, Zeus strolled over and circled, inspecting them.
“You say you are on my mission?”

“I am, Father,” Nemesis repeated softly, hating the sense of powerlessness his presence brought.

“Justice must be very important to you,” he said as he tucked his thumb under her chin and urged her head upward.

“It is, Father.”

His gaze bored into her, making her quake with fear that he would come to know the real reason for her determination to be on Earth.

“You enjoy your time with the mortals?” he questioned, arching a brow.

“I spend time with them to do what I must,” she responded, her voice as neutral as she could make it.

“Methinks that is not the only reason, Nemesis.” Obvious displeasure colored his words as he shifted his hand to cradle her jaw and leaned close. “Methinks it is to avoid me, Daughter.”

As if to prove his point, he brought his face near until he nuzzled the skin of her cheek. In low tones, he whispered, “You will not refuse me. I will have you whenever I want.”

Abruptly he pulled away, shooting daggers at her and her mother, who had remained impassive beside her. He paced a step or two before facing them once more. “If keeping the humans in line is so important—”

“It is, Father. It is why—”

“Silence,” he commanded again. “Then you will have no issue with taking a solemn vow to exact justice on Earth.”

With a dip of her head, she answered, “Justice is my sole mission.”

“Our daughter has fulfilled your word admirably, Husband,” Hera said, slipping an arm around Nemesis’s shoulders in a rare sign of support.

Zeus narrowed his eyes as he considered them.

Hera did her best to appear subservient, but she knew he could sense the disobedience hidden beneath her calm surface, as well as her daughter’s. He would brook no such disobedience.

She suspected punishment would not be long in coming.

Leaning close to their daughter, he said, “As part of your vow, you must understand that if you fail, your time on Earth as a goddess will come to an end.”

Nemesis bowed her head. “I understand.”

“No! Wait, Daughter,” Hera cried, but it was too late.

With a blast of lightning, Nemesis was gone from her side, returned to Earth to fulfill the vow she had just made. A vow she had not completely understood in her haste to be away from her father.

“You do not play fair, Husband. She did not comprehend the true terms of her pledge,” Hera chastised, but Zeus only shook his head and laughed, the sound of it like thunder across the sky.

“Fair? All is fair in love and war,” he answered, and with a clap of his hands, disappeared.

Her body trembling with fear and disgust, Hera stumbled to her daughter’s bed and sat. Pressing a hand to the pain in the middle of her chest, she prayed Nemesis could keep her vow.

Justice must be served or else Nemesis would forever be condemned to life as a mortal, with all its inherent dreariness.

But worse, with the promise of death.
